A neighbour has a '03 M3 Convertible. Spoke to him yesterday and noticed he'd had new rear tyres. These are his 4th set in 12K Miles.

I asked him about getting it tracked but he said the tyre wear is equal throughout the tred.

Do M3 tyres only last 3K miles usually?

Tyre wear is affected by many things.

When the wear is uneven it means that either the tyre pressures are out of spec or that the camber of the suspension is too extreme.

When the tyre wear is uniform but still unacceptably high then generally it means it is either a tyre pressure or toe issue. Toe is were the wheel points inwards or outwards to improve handling but at the cost of constantly scrubbing the tyre even when driving in a straight line.

Chances are though that he just has never checked the tyre pressures.

He's been checking. However saying that I don't know it the pressure he's been using is correct.

I'd have thought the tyre place would have an idea but again who's to say they have any idea.

no, not even close unless he is tracking it or acting the hoon

He only drives it about 500 miles a month to and from work. He's not a bad driver either as he's been taking it extra easy to see if the tyres last longer.

I've suggested he should get it 4 wheel aligned.

An acquaintance has an E92 M3 and the book states they're supposed to last about 2k miles according to him  I only know because he'd not had it long from new and they looked wrecked already.

Might be worth consulting the manual.

You would think so, but after having 4 tyres fitted recently i found 2hrs after having them fitted they were:

NS Front: 36
OS Front: 32
NS Rear: 28
OS Rear: 34

So they managed to get 1 of 4 pressures right (32/30 F/R)

Convertible is a bit harder on tyres but I get between 10k to 16k out of a set of PS2's on my coupe. Worst I ever got was 6k out of Conti Sports, and that was from spririted drving, and they're quite hard.

If he's not driving it hard or carrying 1 tonne of sand in his boot, then something is wrong with the car (pressure, alignment, worn bushes, broken springs etc) or the tyres he's using.

Its busted or he's driving like a tit. I got anywhere between 6000 and 14000 out of my rears on my M3's. Is he running Bedrock Specials or proper tyres?
