15K for a car - options - Honda, Ford, BMW

The Accord may be reliable but it's not cheap when it comes to servicing IMHO, it follows the minor then major servicing interval, the minor service for me has been around 270-300ish, the major comes in at 365+, the + is any other wear and tear work they need to do.

Personally, I'd go for the BM, much nicer car, my brother inlaw has an 03 525 saloon and it feels very good when you climb in an put your foot down.

Nope, I don't think one is more "fun" than the other. Both are relatively boring saloons.

I don't really know what to say to this, if you can't tell the difference driving wise between a 530 and a Mondeo diesel then I'd question the validity of any of your other opinions, frankly.

Especially the claim that a 4 pot Subaru diesel is in some way a world apart from everything else in this thread. Don't get me wrong, the Legacy is a much under-rated car, but you are the first person to claim it to be a credible BMW or Mercedes rival. But then your posts always have been along the line that whatever your Dad has just bought is obviously the bestest car evar. He'll get something else next year and suddenly that'll be loads better than the Legacy and the Legacy wll be 'a relatively boring saloon' as well, it's the jamoor way.

I mean seriously, you think a Mondeo and a 5 Series drive the same?

If I didn't KNOW you'd driven these cars I'd probably be calling BS but as I do I'm nothing but confused.

Bandit, i think you should widen the mileage criterion and give the E-class a drive. Really nice cars which "feel" like a higher end product than the E60 5-series, but then i really like Mercedes products. :)

I haven't lavished praise on any car, I've been very careful with my words.

Resale value would effect my choice in this case. When it comes to selling it I'd rather get some money back rather than giving it away in depreciation.

The Subaru never aims to be as good as the BMW, it's designed for a completely different market. It's the OP's choice of weather they want £37k worth of car for 15k or 21k worth of car for 15k.

The Legacy is a cracking buy when it becomes a 8k/6k car, at 15k it is not a good buy.

Your numbers don't even stack up
The BMW is losing more money there, considerably more in the first year in fact. What kind of crap arguement are you trying to make here?

Who says the person is buying new? I'm talking about at the budget, a 15k BMW has lost most of it's money and a 15k legacy has loads more to lose. I ain't talking about buying new. I am making the point that 15k on a Legacy is a waste of money.

How far do you take this, though? Using that logic everyone would be driving 1989 S500's..

I agree that the BMW is the better car but the Legacy will be more car for the money, as its a cheaper product.

A 15k Legacy will be better value than a 15k 530d? A legacy is a lot of car for the money when the price drops heavily compared to the BMW but at 15k?

If I was spending that much I'd want to be damn sure I could hold on to as much money as I could, not losing it all in depreciation.

according to your own figures, no matter how old it is, the beemer is still shedding money more quickly than the suby.

The bulk of it is lost in the first year. I dunno. Can't believe I'm sat here trying to prove that the a BMW 530d SE is a better car and a better buy than a Subaru Legacy with 15k to spend.

Jez, I'll look at the e-class, even though the mileage is way above what i was expecting. the beemer was higher.

Worth a go mate, you may not like it but at least you will then buy knowing that you didnt like it, rather than having not tested it :)

out of interest, wheres the best place to find out about the differences between:

55 plate bmw and 09
55 plate merc e-class and 09

etc? theres loads of talk of "E" numbers on the bmw, but i dont really know whats different?

55 plate E Class and 55 plate E60 are prefacelift cars whereas the 09 examples of each are post facelift. There are subtle changes to each - the E has exterior changes and a few interior ones, the E60 has interior changes and a few exterior ones.

Note the E Class is being replaced this year. The E60 is not.

the new E is hideous
found a brochure in the house, vile looking car. perhaps it doesn't look so nasty in the flesh?

the old E is a bit of a barge isn't it? bit boring, and it's really a taxi at heart ;)

get the E60.
i'd give a shout to the new V70, but they are nowhere near your price range yet..
