Hey people

I'm 19 and have had my license for 25 months (no claims)

I currently drive a 1.25 fiesta and would love to take one of these out for a spin. (mini cooper s/ john cooper works)

I live in Hertfordshire and was wondering if there are any local companies that offer such a service and if so, would there be a horrendous deposit?

I appreciate any replies

I would suggest you call your local dealer and ask if you can make an appointment to come in and discuss the Cooper S as you are seriously considering one amongst a few other cars. Turn up very smart and ask lots of questions about the servicing, warranty, optional extras and finance packages. Then ask about the handling, comfort and performance. Ask them what the steering feel and gear change is like. If by this point they haven't offered you a drive, point out that the Cooper is definitely top of your list, but you'd need to have a decent test drive on mixed roads before you can properly compare it to the(insert hot hatch you like here) which you tried out last week.

I'd say that's your best bet and will work if you convince them you are not just a test pilot(though you may well be I guess :D). Nothing to lose but a bit of your time and will cost you nothing except a bit of your time.

Turn up very smart

Its a test drive not a job interview.

IMHO A good salesman can spot a potential timewaster from a genuine buyer from a mile away, whether they decide to entertain the fact will determine if you get a drive or not.

I used to work for Avis Prestige and there's no way (and I mean no way) you'll be renting this group of car at 19 without offering to be a sex slave for a week. :o

Only option is to blag a dealer really well for a test drive. But tbh they aren't that special anyway imo! :D

hehe I have been in tesco from 5am-12am earning £11 an hour (good Friday) so i can eventually get a custom version of this :D

£1500 :( About a grand to go!!

Better than the $7000 the production model costs though

Shall be back on £11 an hour come Sunday and would have been on Easter Monday If it wasn't for so much uni work :(

Back on topic of the car, how would i go about it once I'm 21? (16 months away!!)

Its getting harder despite the fact dealers arnt selling as many cars (you would think they would be giving you the keys the minute you walked in) Trying to get a test drive in a focus ST at my local garage is a bloody nightmare, same with a scooby STI. I am 21 but i usually turn up in the VX

Suppose it depends on your local garages really :)

I think it also depends on what you turn up in too. A while ago I was looking at test drives and was told that pulling up in my Micra to try a Golf GTi or whatever wasn't going to look good!

Just go now, when i was 19 i had a saturday of test drives ... 182 cup / civic type R / cooper S and a Fiesta ST !!! The only cars i was struggling on was the slightly more powerfull ones S2000 / Focus ST RS etc as they allways told me i had to arrange my own insurance as theres only covered over 21s

I turn up in a VX220 Turbo, hasnt made a lot of diffrence to me :p

I went to my local Mini dealership last week and expressed an interest and they let me take out a brand new john cooper works there and then. I was wearing jeans a trainers and I look a lot younger than I am!

ah awesome :)

The thing is i have no way of actually buying one so I'm sure they would be able to tell i was lying.

They hold their value so well :(

How did it drive?

Correct but just as in a job interview, making a good impression is important, especially if you are a young bloke wanting to test out a nice car.

The very fact that somebody would go to some effort and show interest in the details of owning the car would show a good salesman that there is more chance of this person actually buying the car than someone who casually strolls in fancying a quick play on a whim.
