A Mugging On a canal boat. The Physchololololology in the location at the rear of it.

Myth - you'll be sent you jail for 5000 life sentences for hurting a criminal.

Truth - you'll go to court for some charge, and the jury/judge will dismiss you as being in self defence of others. 4v1 is no contest, really.

Okay say you have one guy in a headlock, so he isn't really "attacking you" while the others are. They obviously arent trying to kill you like in the OPs video. Are you allowed to to serious damage to the guy in the headlock on the assumption you fear for your life?

What about the other people in the bus who get sporadically punched. Whats proportional force for them? Any one of them could easily take them into a headlock from behind and do something.

Obviously this wouldnt be me doing it. I'm too weak.

Some of what is getting posted here now is completely ludicrous.

Despite all of the displayed bravado and machismo nobody has any ethical responsibility to get involved in any violent situation. The only responsibility of a bystander would be to report the crime to the police. As for being implicit in their death I'm aghast at the suggestion.

Only responsibility, would be that. But they are entitled by law to do more.

From my perspective I would evaluate the situation and, if deemed possible, try to deescalate the situation. The suggestion to get involved by fighting, frankly, is stupid.

Dunno, the guy could easily suffer brain damage. Descalating the solution in the OPs situation is clearly not talking to them.

Anyone with any modicum of 'street smart' knows that making enemies of city gangs is dangerous. Not only are you risking your future safety when walking in public, you are also risking that of those who might accompany you, friends, family or girlfriend for example. Further, a gang may easily follow you then target your home, your car, your pet. Not smart at all.

Ethically the only responsibility anyone has is to contact the police. If you think otherwise then your ethics form no part of living in a civilised society.

What? So you see a potentially lifethreatening crime being committed where you can do something. And calling the police is the ethically correct action?

True but I want to counter Chimerical's point of just phoning the police and let them deal with it. In the period of a minute (barely enough time to call them) someone could be killed. I believe that you have a responsibility to save that life and that if you do nothing you are complicit in their killing. Now I'm sorry but I'd rather do something then have that on my conscience.

Yes, on your conscience, as if that's your main concern or as if you have the luxury to simply worry about that one thing. I guess in your mind you'd become the hero of the moment, save the day, save the girl, save the world.

In reality you'd probably get a knife in your eye and if they were going to kill the original victim they would have done it already or would continue to work towards that achievement after they'd knocked you out/given you a serious injury.

What people are typing here is all theory anyway or hypotheticals but to think in idealist terms is utterly pointless. All this macho nonsense of "I'd step in and do something about it!" is rubbish because if you were seriously outnumbered by a group of fully grown men I don't see what you could hope to achieve on your own anyway.

Its all specific and it all depends upon the context so anyone who thinks they're made of more moral fibre than anyone else because they're Internet Tough guy 101 can jump.

I hope these guys were caught and put away for a loooong time!

In my opinion they've given up membership to the human race - They needlessly assaulted someone for an extended period, risking killing him, or at the least scarring him. At the least he is no doubt mentally scarred for life.

They should be locked up for a LONG time! They don't need a second chance... They've clearly given up their membership to civilisation!

Sounds unrealistic. The police apprehend the suspects and let them walk off with £500? ATM evidence would clearly show that she had withdrawn £500.

Pleasing guilty was stupid.

The police apprehended ONE of the suspects, the other got away with the money. So I guess its one word vs another...

As for pleading guilty, she was distraught, English is a second language and unfortunately did was the duty solicitor told her to. By the end of Thursday she had a criminal record.

She went to her embassy this week and they're looking into it for her...

ps: Can I suggest you discuss that matter on that thread?

You brought it up.

I'll link it to this thread. This is clearly very different. There will be clear evidence for assault. There are numerous witnesses. These guys are clearly drunk or drugged up. Not even comparable. The other was theft, this is aggravated assault.

I would have knocked out each and every one with one blow!....

But really, i probablly wouldn't have helped if it was only me. Ive seen stuff like this before and didn't help out in the past sadly :(

Up to the jury. But personally, I'd say you are more than justified to do serious damage to the guy to facilitate an escape/survival, as long as death wasn't your aim. I.e. he was unconscious and you snapped his neck.

Proportional force to a punch in the face is up to the jury. Personally, if I did want to react, I probably would've punched back. But is it worth it? No.

Why didn't that bus driver pull off when the scumbags were outside? He just left the door open and let them jump on and give him more beatings... WTH??
Fairly safe assumption that this is the bus companies standard procedure. Wait for the police and ambulance to turn up. That being said I think some independent thought on the part of the driver would probably have saved the victim from much of the attack.

I wouldn't intervene if I was on my own, unless I was certain I'd be able to take them all on eg group of kids beating up someone.

If it was older teenagers / adults then I wouldn't do anything if only property was involved, but as soon as it turned into an unfair violent conflict I'd try and get others to join in with me.

you probably could have aswell or atleast one of them if they didnt see it coming and the odds are they wouldnt.
