Currently using the Devolo Homplug Dlan 200 AVDesk Kit for the gaming machine. The media PC is on the wireless, this is just a temporary measure for now (hopefully).

Thing is i want this computer wired to the network, so i was thinking of buying one Devolo Homeplug DLAN 200AV Wall adapter (not an AVDesk Adapter)

Thing is will this work with the AVDesk adapter i have connected into the wall socket downstairs then into the netgear switch port on the router? The technology is exactly the same Homeplug upto 200Mbps except its not AVdesk? Im quite sure that it will be ok but i just thought i should ask. Anyone who uses homeplug networking should be able to reasure me hopefully :)

Thanks

it will be fine only point to note its that there are firmware revisions for the adapters that might mean you have to get all the units upto at least v2, there are details on their website

basically if the new one is on v2 or 3 it might not work with the older unit if thats on v1 firmware, v2 and v3 operate together they just dont like v1

Hi thanks for your reply.

Just been on the devolo website then. Its version 3 thats the latest firmware at the moment. So obviously this new unit will be v3 right?

How can i check the firmware version of my current AVDesk units? Can it be done using the devolo informer provided with the software?

Also i bought my AVDesk starter kit in the middle of last year, i would think that because of that time it would be version 2, would you think the same?

Thanks ;)

Just want to add that I just reviewed the dLAN 200 AVeasy Starter Kit from Devolo and they were excellent powerline sets - far far better than any others out there.

How can you see the software version please?

AND has anybody updated the firmware - noticed any difference?

Not sure if you mean the Version of informer, or the version of the firmware. If you fire up Devolo Informer it should show the homeplugs it has found, so at the moment mine shows;

Study
Device: dLAN 200 AV
Firmware version: 1.4.5.1
MAC Address: 00:0B:3B:27:71:6B

To see the version of Informer, then within the program, click on help, and then select 'About informer' presently using version 24 (17/07/08) myself.

I am using Informer version 20 - which gives the:

dLan 200AV
MAC address
upstream rate
downstream rate.

I can't see a way to see the firmware version of the homeplug itself?

Ah ha - they have 2 sites .co.uk and .com.

The .com has more up to date software (although it says Version 20). When you install "V20" it is actually version 28 (18/12/08) which does give the software version.

The uk version gave V20 as 2006.

I have firmware 1.4.5.1 but the latest is 3.3.4 - not sure if to try an update or not - may brick them - to what advantage?????????????

You dont need later than version 1.45 unless you have mixed brand kit.

Later revisions see to be about minor improvements, particularly in compatibility between homeplug chipsets and to reduce the interference powerline plugs can cause to radio amateurs. Later chipsets also add push button encryption (no use if you dont have the button)

The radio interference fix can mean less bandwidth being available, cancelling out any improvement elsewhere.
