T-mobile G1 – The first of the Google Android Phones. A Review

XDA is doing my head in now. Threads are not noob friendly, constant "use the search", bad grammar.

Not that there is much to do anyway :(

Anyone got the bluetooth working properly or is it a bug?

I got the G1 and nokia N73 paired but everytime I send a pic from n73, its says sending failed but sent ok to my gf's LG KG800.

Wouldn't count on it. Root access is just root access. Unless Google implement it into the main branch you wont get it.

It's not really something people use anymore. If people want a picture I email it, MMS or plug in the USB. This is the way of the G1 of course. If Google thought it was something that needed to be in they would have added it from the start.

I've been using 1.5 Cupcake build designed for the G2 HTC Magic. It's awesome, pretty stable, quicker and much better battery life.

I went to bed at 11pm with 83% charge, woke up at 76%, it's currently on 60% with mild usage throughout the day. Pretty good if you ask me.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=498026 Link if anyone is interested. You need a rooted phone but you can use Nandroid (ALT-B) to completely backup your current setup and restore back within minutes if you dont like it.

Dont be fooled by the version numbers. 4.0 and 4.9 use a HTC build thats quite pretty but 4.9 is pretty unstable with partial working Google apps, whereas 4.0 is pretty stable but no Google Apps at all. 4.5 is the peach, thats based on a Google build with fully working Google apps, it's stable too. Although todays release does have a slight bug which mutes telephone calls if you use the camcorder feature but I guess it'll be fixed tonight.

Carrying on from this....

Theres been some good improvements over the last few days. Currently there's two builds which are pretty much feature complete and very stable.

5.0G (Google build) Pretty much the same as 4.5 but more stable and everything works perfectly.

5.0.1H (HTC Build) Has a HTC Keyboard/Email/Dialler/Camera. Generally regarded as more pretty. Now has full Google apps and very stable. First boots up in Chinese though but easily changed back to English thats only on the initial boot though (But dialler still has English/Chinese characters though).

It's a tough decision of which one to go for... I'm currently trying both. HTC one is a little more bloated but does have a better camera/camcorder.

yeah i still haven't had the guts to root it. i don't really know what could go wrong but apart from improved battery life i don't know what improvements i'd really notice... I assume the official cupcake update will have a lot of the improvements anyway...
mind you as i'm not on t-mobile can i still get the updates without rooting?
