Ati Hd4870 VPU Recover Issue

Hello,

A few days ago I reinstalled windows on my computer and ever since started to get game crashes from time to time. I haven't changed anything driver wise so I have no idea what could be causing this. I have tried to rollback drivers, turn page file off (this did help, but didn't resolve it) and putting my fans higher. These are my pc specs:

Ati Hd4870 512 mb OC
E8400 @ 3.0 ghz
4 gb ram @ 800 mhz
P35 Neo-f motherboard
620 watt power supply

My videocard temperatures idle around 60 degrees (it's pretty hot here atm) and my cpu temps idle around 40 degrees. They go up about 10-20 degrees when on load. I was thinking it could be caused by my RAM, since it's pretty cheap buffalo ram (was short on money) but I'd like to hear what you guys think.

Thanks!

try tracking down a dual/multicore cpu fix on microsofts site, its one that you need to "apply" to use, i forget the link but could track it down.

I'm getting really angry frankly at the lack of some kind of "ultimate setup" page by either MS, AMD, Nvidia, Intel. They really should considering the cost and support issues make a damn page with every latest fix/patch/tweak they use to get their systems stable and things we should do.

There were freely available multicore patches in the past which were rolled into service packs, however there ARE others which AREN'T included in the service packs but they don't tell anyone about them.

For me about a dozen or so games crashed, often with the vpu recover issue, that have all been fixed since installing this MS multicore patch.

Maybe unsurprisingly the issue started when AMD release cat drivers that were supposed to give boosts in multicore systems as the drives were supposed to use more than 1 core, since then crashes all over, since the patch, no problems at all.

I get the distinct feeling that these drivers run fairly flawlessly on ATi testing comps, because they are properly up to date with every gaming oriented recommended patch to the OS, but theres no official list of these patches and what everyone should have to be stable at any point in time.

that page has a fix for city of heroes, where I had the problem, it fixed that and multiple other games.

The link to the patch, if you have a x64 system make sure you use your 64bit IE as it will detect 64/32bit and only offer the download options for the 32 or 64bit depending on the browser, took me a while to figure that one out :p

You go to the ms link in the appropriate browser, "apply" for the patch and MS send you a (very quick) link to the download and read the e-mail, there is a current password and a password for using after a certain amount of time, again that can confuse things. install that patch and see how it goes after that.

Thanks a lot for the quick reply! I'll give it a try, and post the results!

Edit: Just noticed it's for vista, I'm running Windows XP x64 atm, are there updates for that one too?

have a look around that thread or the section on the board, not to sure on XP anymore as I haven't used it since well, way before the latest service pack for it, but you'd expect if theres multicore fixes to newer os's XP probably has them around aswell.

This is the problem I was getting at though, at the very least ATi and Nvidia should have a "current spec" page that lists every single update they run on their test systems and so essentially gives you a default starting place to track down game problems with.
