Just been looking around the loft and found a pair of my dads old speakers. They are Leak 2030, and from doing a bit of research on them they are from the early 70s. Has anyone here had/heard these before?

Are speakers this old even any good, and is it worth me setting them up?

Cheers

Rig em up and try em, old speakers doesn't mean bad speakers buy any length, speaker technology hasn't really progressed much in the past 50 years! Good speakers are and always will be decent, listen to em and see what you think!

Edit: According to some specs I found they can do 60Hz-25kHz, so possibly more like 70Hz+, which is actually not too bad, as I said before rig em up and try them :)

The bigger brother 2060s actually seem to be pretty good speakers from the reading, so definately worth trying.

Well I tried them out. Both the tweeters are broken, and one of the woofers makes a grinding noise when playing music and when pressing the speaker manually. Otherwise I was amazed with how good the other speaker sounded even without a tweeter. I tested them with my dads NAD 3120 amp.

Not really sure what to do with them now though. I'm not sure if the grinding woofer can be fix and I wouldn't know where to find replacement tweeters. If anyone has any smart ideas I'd appreciate your help.

Cheers

Got my dads set of 2030 leaks in the loft, they sound pretty good for there age but not very sensitive so need a good bit of power to get them moving. if you google spares for them plenty should show up as the were pretty common and theres still plenty around. Last time i checked the auction site they were about 30-40 pound a pair so parts shouldnt be to expensive

Haha, I did say when it works properly, old hi fi can still sound amazing :)
While doing research, I heard about the grinding woofer problem, apparently due to the design of them, if left in damp conditions for ages the speaker can warp and get damaged, so you'll need to replace that woofer, also the tweeters. Might be worth taking them apart and see if its actually the tweeters or some decayed wiring though :)

Search for spare Leaks as parts/google Leak repairs/spares and see where you go, if they can be repaired cheaply, by the sound of it you might have some fun speakers :)

My dad still uses his leak 2060s - they are quite nice sounding but my impression is that they aren't the last word in subtelty or imaging. If you can fix them for not too much money then I'd give them a go!

Those Leak speakers had a very good reputation in their day, along with their valve amps. The Japanese audiophiles used to pay stupid money for old leak stuff.
