I used to fish as a kid, but beer and women took it's toll and I ended up jacking it in. Fast forward sixteen odd years, plus a wife and two children and I've started taking my son. We've probably been going for about a year now and joined my local angling club, to save on day ticket prices. We've both gotten really in to it, especially me. :p

I just wondered if anybody on here uses a pole? I fancy giving it a go, but don't really know where to start. I don't want to go mad and spend mega money if I can help it. Ideally a good solid starter pole and a bit of advice will do. I have done a search, and there are a couple of threads from 2007, so I'm curious to know if anybody on here is still at it.

I like the idea of the pole for when time is short. Plonk yourself down, put the pole together, stick on your rig and away you go. Is this about right? I keep reading about top sections and double elastic, this is where I start to get confused. Any help would be much appreciated.

Ive recently gotten into deep sea fishing. My company has a deep sea fishing club that charters a boat every month off the Lymington coast. I went last month, was a cracking day out (apart from the sea sickness) and I managed to catch a 7lb Suprdog Shark!! Once I buy some sea sickness pills I will be back out on a boat!

Fishing is classed as sport now?

Its a game of chance.

Thats subjective. Like saying scoring a goal is a game of chance. Yes there was a lot skill and knowledge involved, but he might have gotten lucky that the wind was blowing in the right direction to edge the ball in....

Its always been classed as a sport so dont act so surprised. You can consider it competitive, when there are competitions world wide to see who can catch the biggest fish etc.

Its more of a sport than wrestling but thats still in the sports section.

I'm primarily a carp angler but have a dabble every now and then with a pole, it can be good fun, and it's great for making delicate presentations. However playing fish with rod and reel is much more exciting imo!

As far as set up goes its very simple, just clip your rig on, adjust accordingly for depth etc just like with a normal float set up and start fishing. With regards to elastic, you will probably have 2-3 top sections with your pole and will fit them with different strength elastics. Fitting the elastic may be a bit tricky to start with, but wherever you buy the pole from should be able to give you good advice or maybe fit it for you.

i did it once when i was a kid but then like you said it kinda just dies out for most people. i wouldnt mind doing at again sometime tho mind you =]

I used to spend inordinate amounts of time and cash on carp fishing before I got married and shifted to Ireland. There used to be loads of carp waters near where I lived (Yateley Complex etc) but apparently there's not a single course venue even remotely close to me now, it's all game and sea fishing which I have absolutely no interest in.
