Hello Chaps, hope your all having a good Easter,

Wanted your opinion, i am selling my VW golf, and i have saved some money for a new car, Basically i have got around 10k to spend, I cant decide either to get a Audi or a BMW

Audi i was looking at a Audi A4 2.0 TDI SLINE,

Any Ideas?

Cheers

The Audi S-Line looks a very nice car, it's weakpoint is the driving dymanics compared to the 3 series BMW at this age. I think the newer shape A4 is a step up, and gets closer to the BMW.

It sounds obvious, but you really want to go and test drive one to ensure it meets your expectations in the driving department, although if you where happy with your Golf, then I'd expect much of the same from the A4!

yeh i was looking at getting a 05/06 plate. i saw a Nice bmw think it was 520D M Sport or something, but the insurance was a killer. Yeh my VW was fine just it was only a 1.6. The audis driver better then the VW Golfs dont they??

Not that much about 8000 a yr? may be a little more.

So why go for a diesel? You need to be doing many more miles than that to benefit from the increased economy they provide.

My first piece of advice would be to look for a petrol car. Generally cheaper to buy, sound nicer, cheaper fuel etc.

Yeh true, but u never know i do make a few long trips to london etc, but its worth a thought, Are Audis a nice drive, im going to have a test drive soon!!!,

Audi R8s are fantastic to drive.

A4s are a little on the dull side.

Depends which one you drive.

The majority will suggest that BMWs are more fun with them being RWD and unless you have Quattro in your Audi then it may be a bit lacking.

The 05 onwards A4 isn't too bad, the obvious difference is it's FWD over the BMW's RWD, which makes for a different feel and obvious difference in driving style required when pushing on..

What I do like about the Audi is it does feel a little more cosseted when just cruising and it looks the part from the outside..

But, a 320D (especially an M Sport) can be easily re-mapped to 200BHP, and is a cracking car, I don't like the exterior styling as much as the s-line Audi, but it is very capable on the road..

i think the Audi A4 SLINE range looks good. but the BMW are nice as well, this is the problem. i might have to test drive both. any idea on what model of the bmw i should get?

You'd need to be making a hell of a lot of trips to London to justify a diesel. For instance, if you lived in Edinburgh and were travelling to London(about a 800 mile round trip) you'd still need to be doing about 15 of these trips a year!

How about something like this?

Nice :) you guys are pushing me to the Petrol, do diesal engines last longer though? sorry for the stupid questions ask me about Pc's and servers and networks lol. I will be going to Birmingham and london, about once a month or so from Peterborough, so its about 100 miles, and the local around town etc.

I think that logic is flawed somewhat. Assuming 10k is the budget, how can a 10k petrol be cheaper to run over lower mileage than a 10k diesel. Sure the diesel might be lower spec, higher mileage or older, but cheaper long distance trips might be worth more than leather upholstry.

Just a thought. Fair enough if you're spending 12k on a diesel or 10k on an identical petrol, otherwise the logic doesnt really work. A lot of people also prefer the driving style of a diesel

Fair enough if you're spending 12k on a diesel or 10k on an identical petrol,

That's exactly the point. An E46 330d with cloth seats and no sat nav for me is a completely different car from E46 330i with leather, sat nav etc etc. You're not really gaining much from sacrificing the goodies!

Thats exactly my point though - to some people cheaper journeys are worth more than the goodies, everyone's priorities are different.

When I bought my mondeo I could have had a Titanium/Ghia X petrol and had some leather or automatic wipers etc, but I bought a Zetec-S diesel for the same price. Its got the toys I need/want and means my daily running costs are lower, even though I only do 10k miles a year
