My stand-up comedy debut this Monday **Now With Video **

I dare you to have a go at making your own version of The Aristocrats joke to finish your act. I recently re-disovered one of my favourite stand-ups on Youtube, Gilbert Gottfried, whose version of The Aristocrats joke almost killed me the other day, seriously.

Nice one, I think you have talent, the coaching will help a lot as your body language was pretty bad on stage, I cant fathom how nervous you must have been.

Couple with getting that sorted and not writing and learning most of the material the night before and you will be pretty darn good. I did chuckle a few times throughout the 6 minutes.

Keep going and get the next one booked I say.

Thought it was really funny. Can't believe it's your first time actually. I would've been bricking it!!

Good luck with future shows :)

Thanks again for the positive comments - can't get enough of them :p

Strangely, I feel *really* hungover today, although I didn't drink a drop last night? I don't know whether it's some sort of adrenaline comedown or something but I feel like carp today.

Just watched it in HD back through the 32" TV and the laughs sound better and I look better, my facial expressions are clearer etc. I'm far more impressed than with my youtube version, pity I can't show you all that.

I'll have to have an OcUK only gig in the future ;)

You're kidding, right?

There'll be a group of people holding up printouts of the Jesus pic.

A group saying "Fail" at every joke.

A group telling their own jokes.

A group calling for your ban from life.

And finally, a group suggesting you buy a Ford Mondeo.

It's ok, I'll bring my keyboard of 1+ Heckle protection.

Just watched it and thought it was really good, although the rocking about on the stage throughout did start to grind on me haha - but I put that down to nerves :) I laughed more in those 5minutes than when I watched Eddie Izzard last night, just don't find the guy funny at all. Great job and good luck :)

Well done; fantastic for a first time.

Agree with the critical bits too: find something that you can see in the audience and play to that (swap around a few). ie looking down.

Get some help with microphone technique too, though not too bad.

If you are gonna use a crib sheet, make it obvious and part of the act if you can.

Get out there and do as many as you can to get the experience; quite a few pubs now do comedy nights.
Agreed it was really good for a first time, the material as a short set is strong, I think practice will help you more than a course, but good courses can be useful in steering you the right way.

Get rid of the looking down and calm down a bit and I think your delivery is absolutely fine, I was expecting to be critical of your mic technique because it's such a common mistake but thought yours was really good for a first timer, maybe a bit more control of timing when you lower/lift it, but other than that really good, deadpan relaxed delivery seems to be pretty natural for you like you say and that's good, your most comfortable style allows the best platform for your material.
Dont worry about writing bullet points on the back of your hand, it's completely common place up to people to 10's and 15's and even beyond that with people trying new or newer stuff, you can make a joke about it, but so long as you're not looking too much it will never go against you.

Keep an eye out for as many chances as you can, open mic/gong nights are going to be the best chance for you to grab some stage time/practice, and you'll find that free nights will often give you a similar chance, but keep pushing for more, not above what you're capable of, but dont limit yourself either. OK he's not got a standard background, but Jack Whitehall has gone from doing open spots/gong shows not much more than a year ago to launching big brothers big mouth and now having a place on the new channel 4 show tonightly, he probably had considerably more chances opened to him than most (his first professional experience was taking a full month sketch show to edinburgh) owing to his family, but he's still a pretty good testament to what can be acheived if you take the chances and have the talent

Thanks for the pointers, very useful. I'm a bit gutted about the looking down but I do put that down to the spotlights being very overwhelming, I really wasn't expecting to be blinded :p The rocking side to side is irritating too, I knew I was doing it, but I think I was just working the tension out of my system, I was a bit shocked at getting called first :)

I presume you are involved in 'the circuit' in some way?

Time Out on my lap at the moment looking for more open spots. Shame everything is in the city and nothing round where I live...

My favourite part was definitely the 'I have a day job part'. :D

The gap between the last joke and that line due to you checking your bullet points was perfect and you should keep it in when you know your routine a bit better.

Indeed, I was laughing during the whole thing but that bit was just class, great job :D

I know it's easy to say, but try and keep still, looked like you were dying for a **** the way you were moving about (Although you probably were ;)) :D You did really well though, I've seen far worse 'Pro' Stand-up's, so keep it up, the more confident you get the better you'll get :)

As of september I'll potentially be a promoter/booker but at the moment I'm just an enthusiastic punter, I frequent a busy local forum though which gives me a bit of an inside eye. There will be more than you know about locally, it can just be hard to find.

check chortle for what's going on locally: http://www.chortle.co.uk/venues/28/south_east_surrey,_kent_and_sussex/ get along to as many things as you can, keep an eye out for student nights at any local institutions as well. Get along to them and introduce yourself to the promoters/organisers, get yourself known and find out the best way to get an open spot at any gigs they have, different people have different means

Nice one - shame the audio wasn't soundboard but nothing you can do, laptop speakers aren't great either so i missed a wee bit, but very good mate :)

Man I'm very happy for you, you managed to pull off your first time show without screwing up on stage and perform well :). I know I'd just freeze up and it'd be so embarassing heh. Nicely done!
