Just moved to newcastle upon tyne and the parents are comming up over the wknd. Need to book somewhere for dinner on the saturday night - either chinesse or italian - anyone got any recomendations?

Big Mussel is good, and chilled out. If you're looking for something more upmarket, Six @ The Baltic is very good http://www.sixbaltic.com/home.html.

One of my faves at the moment is Little Saigon. Really, really top draw food & service. Get the steamed prawn rolls followed by the Seafood Pho washed down with a Saigon beer.

Nothing better

EDIT - If you do like Italian food, don't go to Uno's!

Portofino's at the top of Dean Street is really nice. If it's Chinese I'd go to Mango's on Stowell Street.

If you're just wanting to impress your folks then just pick any flash looking restaurant on the Quayside I guess.

Again - Portofino's...Only go their if you don't like Italian food. If you do, there are only a couple of nice places that know how important ingredients are, and take good care of cooking them!

One of them is Francesca's in Jesmond. The other isn't really a restaurant, and is more of a deli. Nipoti in West Jesmond. Their lasagne is out of this world.

EDIT - Maybe I am being a tad harsh...although, you could do a worse than Portofino's, you could do a lot better. Marco Polo's is significantly better for less £, and is opposite

In terms of Chinese I haven't been to Mango's - But I have been to Hei Hei http://www.heihei.co.uk/, and that is excellent. Also check out Nudo http://www.nudonoodles.co.uk/welcome.html if you fancy noodles.

I could not be more serious when I say that The Palace Garden at the end of China Town is the best place for Chinese food I have ever been or expect to go. I go there with the other half quite often for Dim Sum and there is no food I look forward to more. Staff are great and the place itself is pretty nice, what with its pond full of massive fish.

Take them to Ocean Road in Shields for a curry and a fight.

Alternatively, Pinnochio's on Westgate Road is nice, Zizi's at the bottom of Grey Street is pretty good, The Waterside Palace at the end of the Quayside, and Sabatini's over the bridge.
