I've seen a couple of threads discussing this before, but it seems that Gizmodo have done all the hard work..

Playstation 3
Cost of console: $400 (80GB)
Cost of 3 extra controllers: $43 x 3 = $129
Cost of charging station: $25
Cost of 2 games: $120
Cost of HDMI cable: $3

Total: $677

Wii
Cost of console: $250
Cost of 3 extra controllers: $36 x 3 = $108
Cost of 3 Nunchuks: $18 x 3 = $54
Cost of 4 Wii Motion Pluses: $20 x 4 = $80
Cost of charging station w/ 4 rechargeable batteries: $49
Cost of 2 games: $100
SD card: $12 (8GB)

Total: $653

Xbox 360
Cost of console: $300 (60GB)
Cost of 3 extra controllers: $37 x 3 = $111
Cost of 2 rechargeable batteries: $12 x 2 = $24
Cost of recharging station w/ 2 rechargeable batteries: $30
Cost of 2 games: $120
Cost of Xbox Live membership: $43 (13 months)

Total: $628

Its surprisingly close.

ridiculous article. All I've bought (ignoring games) over the 3 years I've had a 360 is

360
controller
play and charge kit
Xbox Live membership.

And you wouldn't even NEED the extra controller or xbox live membership for a lot of people. One of my friends just has the core with one wired controller.

This is going to be different for everyones needs though, I for one wouldn't get 4 controllers or charging stations (rechargeable batteries :P).

I've posted this about the Wii before. I know a couple of people who bought them for £180 but then went on to get the extra numchuck and recharable battery packs etc.

I think the idea was to spec up the extras to the max just to see how it adds up.
We're going to pretend we're either a family of four or an apartment that wants a system loaded up with four controllers. We'll assume you want to be able to recharge your controllers rather than wasting money on disposable batteries, and we'll pick the model of each console that we'd recommend to a family member asking us for advice. We'll also factor in the cost of 2 games, because nobody buys a console without a game.

why not? im assuming its trying to give all consoles the same specs which would mean having some sort of charging system for both the xbox and wii.

Yeah but the article has counted a charging system for the PS3 which has one built in already?

New PS3s only have 2 usb ports.. plus leaving a console on just to charge the controllers may seem a tad over the top to some people.

However I know i'm guilty of it, and i bet i'm not the only one.

Sure, but then may as well not count stuff like rechargers etc (their spec is a bit vague imo).

The whole article is a bit weird, some stuff they showing RRP, some stuff they aren't? Looks like they picked cheapest HDMI cable, but then expensive controllers, chargers etc. Also Wii motion plus ain't out yet. Wii no HD cables bought. 360 is component only, PS3 is HDMI, list goes on.

It's all a mess really. (Not your fault, the article).

Easier to add up a UK spec, in less than 10 minutes that will be more accurate and easier to corroborate than that article, whilst still sticking to the specs.

I just thought it was a pretty interesting comparison all prices were taken from the same retailer (big and jungle like).

I think its fair to say that many people have the perception that the Wii is cheap, and PS3 expensive and the 360 in the middle. If you did go in and add stuff like the 360 wireless adaptor then the 360 is going to be over $700 on that list. No matter what comparisons you try and do, someone will have a problem with it.

Me personaly, doesn't bother me that much. I had to buy all three anyway. Mainly because otherwise I couldn't have played Zelda, SSBB, Mario Galaxy, Mario Cart, Halo 3, LBP, GT5 prologue, Fable 2 etc..

Actually I did not know they were all bought from the same place, which legitimises the prices at least, although not the product choices.

If we just did cost of entry i.e. bare basics to play offline 1P or 2P then 360>Wii>PS3. If you want super uber all official accessories for 1 player full online, chatting, gameplay then Wii>360>PS3. (Off the top of my head). Both ways PS3 is most :)
