The European commission has launched legal proceedings against the UK government for alleged breach of EU data protection laws caused by controversial internet advertising company Phorm.

Thank god we're part of the EU so when the government goes **** up we can turn to them for help.

the EU are far from perfect and I could go on all day about how much money they waste but this is why I like them. they do stand up for our right from time to time. It is just we bloody pay a lot more for it that we should due to our inept government.

But yes this is good.

The EU can't talk about privacy, it's because of them that all ISPs now have to keep data about every website you visit, every IM you send and every email you send for 2 years.

Err, isn't that the UK not EU law - or am I thinking about something else?

I assumed this was just Jackie Smith being her usual self?

I hope it isn't Europe or we are fooked. Sounds like Anti Terrorist Labour bull to me. The Europeans don't care afaik. They don't have to read the Daily Mail.

The data retention law records sender and receiver info - not the actual contents of emails, phone calls, web pages etc.

The EU case announced yesterday is specific to the UK government inaction over the illegal BT / phorm trials in 2006 and 2007.

The trials were illegal and companies should have been fined but the government have chosen not to do this. Infact they are giving the runaround by stating that it is a matter for:

the police
the ico
the home off
berr

where each are all buck passing to each other.

The EU have come in and are sorting this out.

Nope, across the entire EU. It had to be implemented here as well.

I'm starting to get sick of the EU sticking their noses in to so many things lately. I'm all for increased cooperation, even militarily, especially financially but some things we just don't need their help with.
