Hey all,

Its our 1st Anniversary next week and I would like to take my wife to Barcelona for a few days. Now I am trying to find a deal on a budget here and am coming here for other peoples suggestions!

I'm looking to go on the 24th next week until the 26th. So a 2 night stay. I'm trying to find a flight+hotel package for something around the £300 mark. I am a bit flexible here.

I live in Cardiff but a bus return for both of us to London is only £40 and lets face it, the flights are a lot cheaper when flying from London (for the most part).

Any help GREATLY appreciated.

I went to Barcelona at the end of February for four days with some friends. We stayed in a lovely city hotel, the Hotel Amister on the Avinguda Roma, about a 10 minute walk from the main station. It was also only about 5 mins from two metro stations, so getting anywhere in the city was no problem at all.

If you go, try and get hold of the Barcelona Travel card....you can buy them as 2, 3 or 4 day passes, I believe, and you can order them online so they are sent to you before your trip. They are very handy; we paid about 20 Euros each for a 4 day pass and it allows you access on all the public transport in the city: Metro, bus and overground train services, and in some areas, the tram network. The best thing though is that there is a direct train link from the airport to the main station, and the card allows you to use it. So we didn't have to arrange airport transfers, just ordered the passes in advance, arrived in Barcelona, hopped on the train to the central station then walked up the road to our hotel :)

Also, I used this website quite a bit, lots of handy information about travel, attractions, eating, hotels, etc. Check it out, http://www.barcelona-tourist-guide.com/

Just got back from Barcelona on Saturday for a 3night/4day trip with the lass. Conscript is totally right about the travel card except you can just pick them up at the machines in any train station (we got ours from the automatic ticket machine, 4day pass cost us 19Euros and is well worth the expense)

My advice would be get one of those at the airport and use the train to get to you're hotel as you'll save a packet on a taxi that way (taxi from the airport to our hotel near the center cost us £30!) just find a metro near your hotel before you head off.

It's a brilliant place! if you want a nice lively but good atmosphere we found eating around Jamel I to be decent (we found a really nice square that did the best tapas!!)

Meals were about £40-£50 inc drinks so not the cheapest, drinks were about £3-4 a pint, if you goto the Cathedral make sure you go up in the lift as it makes it worth while.

As for Hotel/flights we just booked them separate www.hotels.com were good combined with www.tripadviser.com (I think trip adviser also does flights as well)

40 - 50 quid ?

You can eat much cheaper than that (if you wish to). There are plenty of eat all you want places that serve very nice food - £10 a head. There is also some pizza place that resembles an easyjet building !! orange and white throughout and does very fast and cheap pizzas...mmmm

I know the places you mean, the GF wouldn't let me go!!

Not sure when you went last but the Euro is now very weak against the £ which has had a fairly significant impact on the exchange rates and prices, also, I did include drinks. I seriously doubt you could eat anywhere decent with a drink each for much under £40, it's his 1st wedding Anniversary not a lads weekend away!

Just get the card from any train station ticket machine, lots speak a little English but they seem to appreciate you trying some basic Spanish first.

so best bet is to head to the train station at the airport to get this card yeah? how far is it to the station do you know? :)

To get to the train station go into Terminal B, up the stairs and across the bridge over the main road to the train station (It's marked out) Theres 2 ticket machines there, get your 4day unlimited travel tickets (19Euros each) and enjoy :-) Trains every 30mins or so I think, not sure where you're hotel is so find the nearest Metro to it and look on a map to find where you need to change.

Have a look here. We stayed in a sweet appartment with a very friendly owner! It was also good to go and actually buy things for breakfast, snacks and beers etc.
I remember getting a 6 pack of San Miguel Premium for 1 Euro 70. An absolute dream

There's isnt a great deal to do around the hotel itself, there are little places to eat and stuff dotted around; but the two metro stations nearby (Enteca and Hospital Clinic), both on the Blue metro line, mean you can get into the city centre easily and quickly....so we went to Hospital Clinic station which was about 3 blocks away from the hotel, about 5 minutes walk, and from there headed into the centre whenever we wanted to eat. Have a look at this map...the hotel is marked and you can see the two metro stations, one to the west and one to the north. Enjoy it, it was a very nice hotel. Four stars, quiet, clean, modern and with helpful friendly staff.

Oh, and make sure you visit La Sagrada Familia. It's absolutely awe inspiring...

Thanks for all the replies I will read them properly when I get home from work. I didn't get a chance to log on last night.

I've been to Barcelona before, in fact, its where I met my wife!

Thanks for the tip on the 4 day ticket, I will definately pick that up!

Aerobus service run every 15 minutes from the airport to placa de catalunya and most other stops along the way, its only 4.35 euros!!

I preferred Gaudi's garden myself...Sagrada Familia is amazing - but Gaudi's garden is more chilled out and has a nicer ambiance to it I thought.
