Not sure how long this will be up for as it live streaming from a player who got their hands on the demo of the game as it recently came out in Japan, but for those who can catch this, at least you get to see what the game looks like.

To sum it up, the battle system is back to the turn-based style, but very fast paced, I would say even faster than what was in Final Fantasy X-2. Enemy encounters are onscreen but the battle transition is basically like a second, so it is very quick. The battle music is the same track that was used in the trailer from E3 2005.

At work so better not check it, but is this the same movie as what was available from the Jap (and US) PSN? (start with a girl in a train and features some fights with metal beasts)

No, its a streaming video of someone actually playing the demo. Tis dead now tho.

Oh for gods sake, by the look of things they again only give you control of one character at a time. Why have they done that? It's what peed me off most about FFXII.

urgh why have they done that...... why cant they just go back to a turn based system like in FFVII, VIII, IX or X.

I dont understand why they feel the need make the battle system super duper fast either. I much prefer tactile fights like used to have in VII.

Wow, hold your horses guys, just saw this:

In this video the player has full control of both characters, is this old or is there an option or something?

/prays for full control, gambits sucked.

Gambits are an option in XII, or not?

They were, but imo the game was nearly unplayable without them. The battle system was clearly built with them as an intention then they realized they sucked so gave people a choice. The flow of the game was just terrible without them.

What I remember from XII was that you could manually override the gambits during battle and tbh I actually quite liked setting them up and seeing how the battles turned out, but then again I am quite easy regarding changes in games so I can understand that you disliked them a lot.

Oh aye, when fighting yiazmat it was often required that you changed characters and override their gambits as he had such a huge array of moves at his disposal and you would have to adapt. Thing is i want to play without any gambits at all, i want full control so i don't get the situations where i just sit back and watch; i found it rather dull tbh. If you tried to play completely without gambits while it was more fun battles would last an age as you constantly switched characters.

Your also missing FF's I to VI which from the looks of it you probably never played. All numbered ones in the series besides XI and XII (Although this one slightly optional) were turned-based, whether it was ATB (Still active when selecting commands) or CTB from FFX (Proper turned-based).

I guess they wanted XIII to be more fast paced to give it a slight real-time feel, especially since the old style mechanic has become really dated by today's standards. Many other JRPGs out for the past few years have become more action oriented Whilst still using commands, i.e. take Namco's long running Tales of.. series as an example. Not to mention they want to give that similiar fighting feeling from the FFVII: Advent Children movie as well, which from the looks of it they quite succeeded, especially when you look at Lightning's movements and air-time.

As for only controlling one or two characters as seen in the demo. Well it is a demo still, so we still don't really know what else they may do in the full game. Perhaps it was story-specific in that given area?

Holy smokes batman way to take my quote out of context.

Lets see I said "LIKE in FFVII, VIII, IX or X." They just happened to be recent titles that in this thread more people could proberbly relate too.

or would you rather be have type "why cant they just go back to a turn based system like FFI, FFII, FFIII, FFIV, FFV, FFVI, FFVII, FFVIII, FFIX, FFX, FFLegend I, II, III or Chrono Trigger"
Thats all I can think of off the top of my head there is proberbly more....

Anyways game looks ok for now. Still gunna be a while before the EU get it anyways so as always il keep my eye on it :D

Some final fantasy fans who loved all final fantasies from 1-1000 began to hold a grudge against people who began to like the game from Final Fantasy 7 >

Sometimes it rears its head in places it shouldnt :p

so it would seem......

Thought I dont see the problem. FFVII to many was a fantasic game it also brought a lot of fans who did not know of the FF series. Mainly due to the fact that FFVII was the first Final Fantasy game released on PAL.......
Heck even if you owned an American SNES the only Final Fantasy games you would have played is FFI, FFIV and FFVI as none of the others was released out of Japan until recently.

They also seem to overlook the fact that if it weren't for FFVII bringing in loads of new fans their precious final fantasy would have probably been abandoned years ago.

Some videos show you having full control over all characters, others show only control over one character. I am assuming this is either an option or at the start of the game you are limited to control of one character much like the nibelheim flashback in FFVII.
