ATi's 40nm 4770 - info.

Maybe i'm missing something, but they're releasing something to compete with the 9800GT now? Doesn't all the last slide illustrate is how it's taken them 2 years to better the 8800GT?

Is this literally the first ATI card to beat the 9800GT for price/performance? Because the 4850 always cost more?

Too...many...cards...!!

4830.

Edit: To elaborate, the 4830, at least on OcUK, is cheaper than the 9800 GT by a fairly significant (£77 vs. £94) margin and also performs as well as, if not slightly better than the 9800 GT. The 4770 is merely going to extend that lead. Actually, the 9800 GT has a pretty poor price/performance ratio on here when you look at the other options - the GTS250 can be had for only a tiny amount more, same with the 4850, and the 4830 is much cheaper than it.

So why the big show to beat a 2 year old card? When they have already done it?

Like Lightnix said, they're going to beat it even more for a similarish price. Effectively, they'll be giving consumers an even better competitor for Nvidias offering, hoping that in that price range people will completely forget about the 9800s full stop so AMD can walk all over that part of the market.

They might have already beaten it and given people a reason to consider something other than a 9800, but now they're trying to make people forget about the 9800 completely.

Its only going against the 9800 GT, as thats the only Nvidia card in that segment, they have no option, they made a new card for that segment, where as Nvidia havn't, they were going to resticker that 2 year old 8800 GT for a 3rd time (like they did to the 8800 GTS) and stick that back out, but their partners kicked up a fuss not wanting to do it yet again, as they know we the consumers are getting ****** off with it, and quite right to, as enough is enough. :)

They're just saying this is the card it's priced to compete against (when technology companies talk about competition, they usually mean in terms of price, not performance as performance is often quite difficult to gage accurately) - they're saying they are innovating in a pricing segment where Nvidia is not.

yup 40nm should use lower power but you know how it goes, uBer chip runs cool with low volts at XYZ-MHz . . . its just too easy to add a little more voltage and enjoy the increased clocks.

The Current HD4670 (£55-£70) is a masterpiece imo, I do hope AMD release an update with double the amount of shaders and faster memory but still BUS powered . . . lets see how they play it!

£75 pound is a very sweet pricepoint indeed for a new card however it really does need to give the 8800GT/9800GT/250GTS/GTS Jordan a good spanking as any serious gamer on a budget can pick up a used G92 core for that money!

AMD are pulling nVidia into a savage price war and I love them for that, they did it before with Intel and the poor Dresden outfit nearly went bankrupt! :(

I am a big fan of both AMD and nVidia hardware but nVidia really need to get back to their true selves and start releasing innovative and well priced kit for the *masses* to play with!

That's the problem with NVIDIA, they don't need to, they've got like 70% market share and loads of blindly loyal fans, so they charge a hefty premium. Makes business sense unfortunately for us.

I wonder how ATI are gonna play this one price wise?

I'm thinking £99 at launch then settling down to about £80-£85 after a few weeks with new modified versions turning up after a month or so with custom cooling etc

It's a price war and AMD are pitbulls, if they have the nads to take on Intel I think they will do the same with nVidia, following the theme they started last year when the HD48xx series struck.

These new cards can't offer anything new over the original HD48xx release except price, man if they are £75 I am buying two for sure heh! :p

That heatsink just looks bizarre!

I don't know, 4670's are ~£65 and the 4830's/cheap 4850's come in at ~£100 so I think starting out at £99 might put people off it a bit.

The rumoured US price is $99/~£66, so once it reaches here it can't be more than 33% more expensive, right? That'll land it at somewhere about £80.

You are right. It should be £66 plus VAT over here = £75.90 although I would expect them to be slightly higher on release for the first couple of weeks.
