Recently, the Mondeo (2.0 TDCi) has been struggling to rev beyond about 2500rpm especially in higher gears. It started on thursday when I was driving to london, it was so bad it was like hitting a brick wall in third or 4th.

After a few 100 miles, its better but the problems definitely still there. 1st, 2nd and 3rd are fine, it pulls strongly to the redline but 4th and 5th seem to struggle. (Havent tried in 6th, that wouldnt be legal :p). There's a steep hill on the way to work which goes from 2 lanes at the bottom to 3 on the way up - normally when there's a berk doing 50, I can drop it to 5th and overtake easily in the outside lane, but today it struggled overtaking an old polo

Low down torque is fine and its definitely getting boost, but its as if it looses it. No odd noises or smoke or anything. I've had a look and the intake hoses all look intact.

Now, a few things have happened to the car recently. The clutch and DMF were replaced a few weeks ago but it was fine directly after that. Last weekend, I also cleaned the EGR and MAF because my mpg was down. Monday to Wednesday it was perfect, mpg was right up and it was pulling strong. Yet, on thursday, this problem seemed to develop (cant be sure when as I dont normally have a need to push it beyond 2000rpm).

Any thoughts?

my sisters focus TDCi did similar and it was the turbo, although it sounds strange that it does it only in 3,4,5

Probably does it in 6th but I'd be doing well over a ton if i tried it.

In neutral the revs shoot right up and it bounces off the limited, you can hear the turbo whistling away and theres no smoke.

There's only 48k on the damn thing...

Assuming its been serviced properly, the service just before I bought it, so 13 months/12k miles ago.

Its odd that it just suddenly started

A broken MAF sensor could do that, how did you clean it ? You can check this by unplugging the MAF and seeing how it runs this will probaly bring the engine managment light on which will need cleared by a diagnosic tool.

Nope, its very smooth and quiet. There's a bit of a buzz thats been there since I've had it, which I've just found is the intake pipe resonating on the subframe.

It idles fine too

MAF was cleaned with a spray of electrical contact cleaner and left to dry thoroughly - it wasnt touched at all.

Is there another way to test that wont require a diagnostic tool?

No of course, just meant I didn't give it a hose down and a scrub with a wire brush or anything :)

Do you mean the main intake hose that goes from the bottom of the EGR around to the turbo?

You can get DTC codes from the trip computer - there's none logged.

Whatever the problem is, its intermittent. On the way to work this morning, I thought I'd leave the window open to listen for any noises. Came to join the motorway, 4th gear at 30, foot down and it pulled cleanly all the way up to 85...

Then, on the hill I had a problem with yesterday, managed to accellerate from 60 to 80 in 5th up the hill - any Devoners here that know telegraph hill will know thats no mean feat for a normal car!
