£2000 car scrappage scheme

The problem I have with this is that it will artificially raise the price of used cars. Basically anyone who is selling an old car will know that they could get £2000k for it if buying new.

Now, obviously not everyone with an old car will be looking to buy new/nearly new anyway, but it will affect some people. My dad always buys new cars and then runs them for years, in the past 32 years he's only owned 3 cars. His current W reg Astra estate has just turned 9 and so would be eligible for this, looks like it's probably worth around £1300? Yet if he wanted to trade it in / sell it, he's never going to accept that price now, because he could get £2000 for scrap.

So effectively what this will do is reduce the supply of cheap old cars and thus boost prices somewhat. Currently the used market is fairly competitive, I mean he couldn't slap his car up for £1750 because he'd get undercut by other people. Yet if people start scrapping for £2k it will reduce the level of competition and mean that those people that ARE selling rather than scrapping (perhaps they can't afford new) may be able to get away with higher prices.

It also means that older cars will devalue even less than before. Buy an 8+ year old car, and you know that (after 1 year of ownership) you will ALWAYS be able to get at least £2k trade-in against a new/nearly new motor. Again, the chances are that people buying an 8+ yr old probably won't be looking to buy new in the near future, but it will impact things to a certain extent.

It's also true that not all 9 year old cars are "old bangers". I mean there's not really a great deal wrong with my dad's car, it almost seems a bit sad to think that it is worth more in scrap than it would be for someone to actually buy and use it.

That really rather depends how you measure success, doesn't it?
40% increase year on year (germany) compared to a negative (-30%?) here is a very strong argument for 'success'.

How are the poor doing, is the lack of cheap cars keeping them off the road and thus limiting job opportunities and keeping them poor? Actually this may well be less of an issue in Germany as I believe the public transport is a lot better.

How is the environment doing with all those perfectly good cars being dumped and new ones being made

In germany, pretty much everyone drives german cars.

So by definition, it is a very sucessful scheme over there.

In the UK however, it wont benifit us as much because we dont really have an automotive industry.

So what's to stop someone who was going to buy a car anyway, going out picking up an old banger for £200 and claiming back the £2000?

1) You have to own the banger for a year before it's eligible and 2) You have to be buying a new car in the first place.

£2k seems like a nice amount of money, but when you put it into the context of buying a new car it's not a lot. For instance, if someone is struggling to afford a 14k car, they aren't suddenly going to have no worries because it will only cost them 12k.

The bottom line is that it could be a nice bonus if you are already planning on a new car, you could save a bit of money or offset it against a better model or more options etc. I doubt this would give many reasonably intelligent people the incentive to buy a new car if they weren't planning it anyway.

If you help the car industry, whether the parent company is UK based or not, it will keep the massive supply / manufacturer industry which is UK based afloat. Not sure of the exact figures, but I have 200,000 workers in mind from a new report a while ago (includes people working for the likes of Honda etc *and* those in independant employment who make parts for them etc).

Agreed, then you loose about £2-3k once you drive it off the forecourt!

so you believe that the Government is going to subsidise the car industry to the tune of £2000 per deal - wake up please!

Its a sales-ploy - ANYONE can get the £2000 discount/allowance against a new car - dealers are giving them away.

It will never ever happen.

khushy

Given the news i just thought i better quote the above for the lolz

Not really. In this case it's fairly obvious that success should be measured against the German government's objectives. Their tactics were to boost the German economy through extra sales of new cars; it is commonly perceived that this has been achieved. Unless you know something we don't?

my p205 'f' reg the starter motor looks like its on its way out, i'm looking at selling it or keeping it in the garage (just incase i need it), as i now have a company car and my other car so i don't require 3 cars...

does the car need to be running, or i can strip everything out then scrap?

can't really see this helping me much, as i will need to scrap it and buy a new car then sell it :(

or i just sell my p205 1.1, its in very good condition no rush anywhere and inside is also very good how much do they go for?

If the car's still useful to you as a shopping trolley etc., just change the starter motor. It's an easy job in a 205 especially a 1.1 where there's loads of room. £55 from EuroCarParts iirc.
