Clutch change - hydraulic vs cable

Evening.

I managed to destroy the clutch plate on my Saab this evening - and as such need to change the clutch.

As far as I'm aware, the clutch is hydraulic - I'm wondering if there's any difference to a cable clutch, with regards to changing the clutch?

Does anyone know the procedure to change the clutch on a Saab? Is it a complete *fatherless child* of a job?

Oh, one more thing - if I'm feeling lazy, any idea on the Saab book time for this? Just so I can roughly price it up at a garage.

If its anything like the cavalier/vectra its based on you can change the clutch via the inspection plate on the bottom of the box so a easy job. The changing process should be the same just check for leaks.

Thanks for that. Can anyone else back that up?

The car is a 1998 9-3 2.0t.
 
I would not recommend changing to a cable clutch, as my 900 has one. It is very heavy and not as easy to use as the hydraulic clutch that replaced it in your 9-3. In any case you cant easily convert it to a cable clutch as the slave cylinder lives in the gearbox itself and the pedal assembly is different due to the master cylinder being attached going through the bulkhead (larger hole than needed when using a cable clutch pedal.

Guide for converting from cable to hydraulic You'll understand why it isn't worth it, plus this site does have some excellent guides for ng900 / 9-3 jobs.

Thanks for the info, I'm not wanting to change to a cable clutch though, just wondering if the process to change the clutch was any different on a hydraulic system :)
 
Ah, i see:D wrong end of stick.

I believe it is the same procedure regardless of the operation.

When my car had the clutch changed at Hereford saab in 2003 the labour cost was £166.32 + vat (includes 10% service discount). It is probably cheaper to go to an independant garage and supply your own parts though.

Bloody hell, what a mission!

Stuck driveshafts, seemingly hundreds of mounts to undo...and finally the clutch is out! Its not pretty, all the material has gone :eek:
