I'm always berating the wife due to her lack of knowledge and lack of interest with anything mechanical but she hit back with something I'd forgotten about.

First time driving in Europe, we landed in Faro and got taken to the car rental place and I mentioned that I was seriously worried about the steering wheel being on the wrong side and more importantly the accell/brake/clutch controls being reversed. Yep I thought I'd looking at a mirror image and could see problems on the horizon. :D

Also when out in a friends car his left indicator was on for what must have been miles, told him and his immediate reaction was to yank the steering wheel to the left to get them to auto turn off. Scared the crap out of me as we must have been doing 30-40 at the time. When I asked why/what he had done he just simply said it was the first thing that came into his head.

I was parked facing down on a steep slope so I thought i'd better leave the car in reverse in case the handbrake slips. I yanked the gear lever into reverse and the car jumped backwards and stalled. Of course I thought the engine was off and it was safe to do so, but I forgot to switch the engine off before I put it in reverse. Silly me.

Giving my old mk4 escort 1.6 some beans and went 4th to 3rd at silly speeds. cue cvh death rattle.
Replaced the engine for a 1.8cvh and did the exact same thing about 2 weeks later:(

On a similar note..

Parked my car that had just had a ragging across the moors on a steep hill and forgot to leave it in gear.

Cue brakes cooling down, contracting and the car rolling down the hill and neatly parking itself in the car workshop opposite. The owners were very confused to find a car they had no idea about and no keys for neatly parked in the middle of their workshop. Not quite as confused as I was when I found it there though

I once did the classic comedy cliché of getting into a car, starting the engine, placing it in "reverse", looking round over my shoulder ready to go backward, lifting the clutch and shunting forwards into a wooden railing.

made a t*** of my self in my first week of being on the road, i was following my mate about and he decided to go donut which was full of "boy racer's", parked up and when we was ready to go i went to turn ignition on and could hear a loud weird noise thinking my ignition broke when infact my engine was still on, just didnt notice :(

then reversing out i stalled it then drove half way home with no lights on! haha numbnuts ay?

that was just when i passed and that it really

when I was 17, in my mum's car

going down a fairly steep hill 13 or 16 degrees I think at about 30, on a thin B road, to show off to my younger brother I steered with my knees for about 10 metres

as we caught up with the car in front I took my legs down, and went to press the break, but accidentally got the clutch instead

cue : further acceleration towards the car in front

luckily I managed to find the break just after that, and missed the car infront by inches

since then, I've not done anything stupid in a car (8 years ago :) )

About a month after passing my test -trying to brake with my left foot whilst with my right foot still ever so slightly on the accelerator at about 30 mph to try and recreate a noise for the mechanic that I kept getting whilst braking.

Pressed brake with normal left foot clutching action somehow and cue mechanic who wasn't wearing a seatbelt flying forward and headbutting the windscreen leaving a nice 3" cut across his forehead :D Oops :D

Quite recent, hadn't closed the boot properly and it was left ajar whilst going into B&Q. Had a little panic when I noticed on my exit from the shop as my gym bag, laptop, change of clothes and tools were in there. Thankfully nothing was took.

Not me personally, but my mate before he past his driving test, was thinking he was good driving his K11 micra he had just bought, backwards and forwards on his drive. He left the drivers door open forgetting about the small tree, reversed and crunched his door back, bending it into the wing!
Not being content with just a broken door/wing and being slightly annoyed at himself, he lightly kicked his rear light cluster, which also broke.

My other mate left his car in gear while working on it and turned it over, bumping it into his house, fortunatly no damage to the house and only a little to the car.

Suppose the dafest thing ive done is keeping my GTi after it hit about 60k, its just been a total money pit ever since.

Reversed into a signpost of some sort yesterday while doing a 3 point turn. Luckily the horrible clanking noise was the towbar hitting it, not the car :p

School girls... They're the cause of all my driving idiocys. Worth it for an eyeful mind.
