Been ID for buying Alcohol at 26

Oh noes the outrage of it all!!111 etc. etc.

It never ceases to amaze me how people take offence at things like this. Fact of the matter is, you obviously don't have a very old looking face, whether you're 26 or 56. A lot of people that are under 18 look about 25 and as such many stores introduce a policy to tell their staff to ID anyone who looks under 25.

This is nothing to do with a Nanny state I assure you, merely common business practice. And I for one, would prefer to receive a compliment by a shop assistant thinking I look young, than have groups of 15 year old chavs drinking cheap cider on the corner of the road. Get over it.

When I worked as a barman at a festival the police started sending up little brats to try and catch us out. None of this several thousand £££ fine, just £80 into their hands (a little dodgy eh?). Over the weekend the people they were sending up were getting more chronologically ambiguous.

This resulted in a colleague of mine ID'ing a 42 year old woman. Albeit a very young and attractive looking 42 year old woman.

the over 25 thing is fairly common. They'll still sell it to you if you're over 18, but if you look younger than 25 they will require ID.

What difference does it make though, what kind of crazy person doesn't carry ID around with them?

people who dont have a car/motorbike perhaps? or maybe you think everyone carrys around a passport

I thought it was bad for me, they don't even think I'm 16 :(... Hope it goes away after 21 and they assume I'm older than 16 lol :D. Oh well no biggy if you carry your ID or license...

People who disagree with the law? It was only implemented here after 2001... Many people still think it's rubbish. And of course, occasionally you simply forget.

It's weird getting ID'd now, back when I was 16, I've been with friends many times who had no trouble buying a crate of beer or whiskey, and never had a mention of ID, and now as we are getting older and actually over the age limit (21/22 now) then we are getting ID'd. Oh well :p

A fair few of my friends at uni who don't drive have all just got provisional licenses, even though they have no plans on driving soon, to them it's worth the fee as they'll be paying for one eventually anyway and it means no hassle when buying beer or getting into clubs.

I don't drive/ride, but I still have a provisional driving licence. Why not? It's only about £40, after which you can put it in your wallet and never worry about being caught without ID ever again.

im sick of being asked if im bloody 25 !

the scheme theyre signed up to is look ? challenge 25

not ASK EM IF THEYRE 25

even the huge badges they wear and stickers on tills say LOOK 25. basically if we look younger then theyre meant to ask for ID. i even started just saying "yea im 25" and then they ask for ID ??? :s

Read up about it, its to stop adults buying alcohol for underage people lame excuse because any adult from 25 to 99 could buy alcohol for underage people in exchange for money or sexual favours.

Retailers are today launching Challenge 25 in an effort to beat proxy purchasing of alcohol for children by adults.

Absolute joke.

Another case of missing the problem, how about more police on the beat at night and more penalties to underage drinkers and their parents.

Tesco will refuse to sell booze to people who look under 25 - unless they can prove their age - from May.

The policy was ordered after one of its Express stores in Blackpool was fined £6,000 and threatened with a licence ban for persistently letting under-18s buy alcohol.

Tesco, the first company to be hit by a new "three strikes and out" law has appealed.

But it said a national Challenge 25 rule will replace its current Challenge 21 scheme.

Im 22 now but i remember when I was 17 or so, trying to buy alcohol was so much fun lol good ol' days going into corner shop after corner shop until got served :D (at that time though was only drinking bacardi breezers or smirnoff ice's hahaha)

i dont see how them asking me if im 25 will stop me giving tesco value vodka to the school kids outside and luring them to my grotto

I get asked in ASDA all the time, even though I'm 22. Although the girl at the counter basically told me it's for the cameras.

meh

We used to have a Policy of Think 21 where if you didn't look 21 you got asked for I.D but since the firm got fined 60.000 quid for selling to a youth it has been raised to a Think 25 policy. You also have to bare in mind that if one of our staff members sells to a Youth they themselves also get fined, Around 1000-2000 quid I think.
By complying & carrying I.D. you are helping us keep alcohol out of kids hands, Try not to be awkward about it as we don't make the rules.
It is not easy working in the Only place in town you can buy alcohol through the night Especially Fridays after the clubs get emptied.

Thank you for your co operation. :D + :p

That's all very well until you fall foul of Section 92 of the Road Traffic Act 1988, and can't get a license, provisional or otherwise. I don't routinely carry any form of ID. If I didn't have a passport, I wouldn't actually have any.

I used to get IDed every now and again in supermarkets and offies until I was about 27-28.

I actually got IDed again last year in a Sainsburys in Leeds. Showed my picture driving license and the woman on the till called her mate over to check if it was real as she'd not seen one of the plastic card ones before (). This was at the age of 33!

I took the wine back to wife in our hotel with a big grin on my face. She asked me what I was so happy about. :D

i see the reasoning but its up to you to decide wether we look 25 isnt it ? cashiers in shop near us ask "are you 25" every single time i go in:p

id be less bothered if they just asked me for ID because the 25 question leads to that every single time anyway

Plenty of places don't accept provisionals which is a little silly in my reckoning.

I get ID in Morrisons regularly (the only place I ever do). Im 31 and I look well under that but they are extremely over-zealous with the ID in the Jarrow branch. Even a uniformed police with a warrant card wasn't getting passed them. I sure they have a tally count in the staff room there!

I am well aware why the store do it, but i am not sure i buy the whole "keep alcohol away from kids" theory. I think it's more to do of covering the store's back side more than prevent teenage drinking.

If i am in a gang of youth, and knowing that the person buying it will get ID, then you just send in the person in the group old enough and stock up. Everyone wait in the car park, it is as simple as that.
