T-mobile G1 – The first of the Google Android Phones. A Review

T-Mobile unlock phones for free in America, they have to but I've never heard of them doing it for free in the UK, they normally charge £15.00. Keep us updated though :)

I got mine unlocked from Ebay, £14.50 and the code arrived within 30mins. No issues.

Download this:

http://koushikdutta.blurryfox.com/G1/DREAMIMG-RC7.zip - This is the Original STOCK firmware.

Rename to update.zip and place on your SD card and flash it as you did the hacked firmware.

I would suggest doing a "Wipe" before flashing. This will obviously delete any downloaded content/customisation.

After a while you will be given an over the air update. Job done.

help!

i renamed the zip to update.zip and placed it in sd drive, reboot and boot up in recovery mode (home and back buttons)

done the wipe with alt + w

then applied the update.zip with alt + s

got error message

installing from sdcard
finding update package
opening update package
verifying update package
E: no signature (1 files)
E: verification failed
installation aborted

what's happening? i formatted the sd card as FAT32

help!

ah!, unzip the zip file to the sd card and boot up with camera and power buttons, flashed to stock firmware now :)

now waiting for UPS

Use a file browser like Astro or similiar then simply tap the file to install it :)

Ensure you have the G1 set to install from unknown source in the Application settings.

All apps can be got from the 'Market' it's like Apples App Store but more open (Wifi tethering programs excluded :) ) There are LOADS of programs there, I mean LOADS!

Ones I quite like are:
Useful Switcher - Great for turning on/off Wifi/BT/GPS. Also has a 'torch' and more
App Manager - Installs programs from SD and also uninstalls too
aTrackDog - Checks for updates for your installed programs
Movie Finder - Finds local Cinemas and movies
My Tracks - Logs your location via GPS then you can upload straight to Google Maps. AWESOME
NetCounter - Tracks your internet usage
PowerManager - Allows you to set profiles depending on battery condition etc. Good program

Excellent! Will take a peek at this ;)

Its here :D

Can't seem to get the back cover off though lol?

Slide it open push the clip up at the top of the phone but the case doesn't seem to pop off at the bottom and I'm worried about applying too much pressure to it? Should it just pop off? According to a youtube video I saw it should?

Yes, but the one your on about is RELIABLE with many people using it reporting no problems as far as I know.

Ive used them twice and can vouch for that. Second time, I goofed up and they were still helpfull.

http://www.unlock-tmobileg1.com/ - VERY Reliable - £16.99

http://unlockg1mobile.com/ - Is $19.99 which is apparently around £13.43 according to XE.com currency conversion.

LOL @ these cowboys: http://www.unlocksearch.com/

They charge £2.99 to tell you WHERE you can go to unlock your phone - ROFL.

Just used a guy off the bay, £13.00 paid got a mail 10 minutes later with a code :D

All unlocked and running my Orange sim in it now :)

One thing though I don't seem to have the 3G symbol like I did when I had my work T-mobile sim inserted?? Is there any settings I need to add for an Orange SIM?

Sounds like you are not receiving 3G. Probably APN settings.
