I got a letter in the post this morning inviting me to a job interview. I've been after the job for a while. I just found out that I cannot request the day of work (my current job) as there is no available spaces left. Is there anything I can do?

Tell them you need time off for personal reasons. Though you wont get paid they cannot ask questions nor refuse your request.

When you say you can't have the day off, have you already asked? If so it's going to look very bad if you call in sick

nope, mate checked for me as I've been off most this week on annual leave. I don't want to ring in sick and I'm just afraid if I ask for time off, my manager will say no. My manager has previously said that she will not let people take time off unpaid :(

IIRC they aren't allowed to refuse to allow you time off for a job interview, although they don't have to pay you.

Bear in mind I don't have anything to back this up and it's just from hearsay =P

ring them and ask for it to be changed to a different day. Not hard really.
Most places will understand that people can't always attend on the day the are originally offered!

If you cannot get time off, call in and say you're boiler has broken down and is ****ing water all over the kitchen etc and that you'll be in as soon as you can get the water stopped. Then rearrange it for the morning, first thing ;)

I'm pretty sure that employers have to give you time off if you can prove you have an interview though, they don't have to pay you obviously. We need an H.R. person in here ASAP! :P

No that's rubbish, (which a quick read of employment related sites will tell you). It's a myth. The only time when the employer has to allow you to have time off to attend interviews is if you are being made redundant and are in your consultation period (and even then there are limits they can place on it and you have to have been there two years to be eligible).

Google for something like time off for interviews rights and look at the UK sites returned (as other countries may have other laws)

edit: I am not a HR drone nor do I play one on TV (but it's not that difficult to Google Mmmkay)

I pulled a sickie to get my current job. My department was told there would be a redundancy, and I managed to suppress my conscience and called in sick to go to an interview. Got offered the job the next day, then 2 mins later was told my position was redundant. Timing is everything :p
