So, with the '5 off the road for a while I'm looking for something to limp to work in.

A family member has offered me what I'm pretty sure is an old Volvo 440 for 150 quid. It doesn't look too bad, bit tatty here and there but largely ok. What sorta things should I be looking for, are these things pretty bomb proof or are there any common faults that tend to kill them off?

I'm looking myself now for some info, but would appreciate any insight you guys have :)

Vauxhall Omegas are very cheap, to be honest though if the volvo works and is only temporary i don't think you can go far wrong for £150.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. He reckons he could get 250 for it, but is doing it as a favour to me :)

I just don't want to drive it to work and be stuck on the roadside tomorrow! :D

It's not a "typical" Volvo - most of the running gear is Renault derived. For bombproof Volvo-ness you need a 7/8/9 series.

I think your doing him the favour taking it off his hands for 150 quid!

Without seeing it, its hard to say, but, I wouild not expect much from a sub 300 quid motor.

Hahah, well I'm hoping it'll work to a basic degree. I had a look at it, fired up well enough; engine bay looked fairly clean. It's got some dents/minor rust, that sorta stuff. If I did have it, it'd not be for long!

Good luck with it, tbh, it'll probably work out to be one of the most reliable & cheapest to run cars you've owned - sods law usually works out like that!

Well, another car I looked at today sucked, so I'm out of options if I want to get to work tomorrow. I'll post up some pics and stuff for the lulz tomorrow :)

What you need to remember is that the engine's of Volvo's are usually very reliable, but everything else, such as suspension components, are just as susceptible to wear and age as every other car.

So I got the tax, switched over my insurance aaand...

... The battery was flat, even though I'd been assured it wasn't. Wasn't able to jump it there and then, so he'll be bringing it over tonight. I'll post up the pics for everyones amusement (including my own) tomorrow :D
