I'd say so, especially if you already have some USB storage. Dead easy to use, no messing around with any configuration and plays practically anything you throw at it.

Just bought a 16GB USB drive so wouldn't be hard lobbing on a video or two and plugging it straight into the TV, so to speak.

Thing is at present I have a DVI cable going from my laptop to the TV and that does the job nicely, but it'd be better if I could just lie in bed and watch films without having to get up again and turning the laptop off every time. Also sometimes I let my uni mates watch films when I'm away and they constantly change my background to disgustingly sick pictures lol

This device is Networkable. Apparently you can add a Wii Network adapter, which is USB to RJ45 and add a small bit of software and you then get a network port.

I'll try and find some links for this - looking into buying one of these devices to replace my media PC too and the networking was an issue to me.

doh beat me to it :/

usb too rj45 f*t*w.

What about file compatibility? MKV / Xvid?

It reads both fine.

I rip my dvds into .mkv containers. x264 video/ac3 audio format as it doesn't decode dts. You need a av receiver to get that working via the optical out.

Edit, If you have an mkv container with dts you can convert the audio using popcorn audio converter to ac3 which takes around 10/15 minutes.

I haven't had a problem with any xvid/avi files either. All in sync too.

It doesn't read all subtitle formats yet but I believe they are looking into that with firmware upgrades.
