Test drives..

If you did get stopped by police and claimed you had DOC on your policy would they actually follow it up? A mate of mine who's 20 drives his dad's E46 M3 via DOC and I dread to think what trouble he could be in if the police stopped him.

If he's got DOC he wouldn't get in any trouble as long as there are no clauses that state he cannot drive such a powerful car.

Chances are if you got stopped on a test drive they would check the car had insurance, realise it was insured but not too the driver and then ask you to prove you were insured. When you claimed you had DOC they would usually phone up the insurance company or a number the police have a check.

At least thats what they do on Road Wars.

y? They can check your insurance quickly from the road side, if it has DOC, they will let him go.

They will most likely tell him hes an idiot for driving that kind of car on DOC though. Yes DOC means you can drive other cars, but there is a limit to what car you should be happy driving with only 3rd party cover.

Thing is his dad could quite easily pay for any non major repairs to the car, but just refuses to pay what the insurance companies want for a 20 year on that car. It's about taking a risk, and some people take that risk.

haha!

Since when does anyone on Road Wars have DOC insurance?

Never so the car gets left at the side of the road and the person arrested usually.

Don't some DOC policies have you have to be over 21 to drive a car of such power and over 25 to drive a van/car over 3litre or something like that.

On Bell you can be any age. My dad has already said when I take out my policy he will let me drive his car on the DOC but only very short distances. It is at the end of the day an enormous risk and even when you have accidents justice is not always a result.

It's a big risk, not one I would take. If my mum had an M3 and offered to let me drive it on DOC I wouldn't. I would if I was a named driver on her policy for the car but not just on DOC.

When you drive a car that isn't yours you are generally a more careful driver but I completely agree the risk is always there. Some 17 year old idiot could drive into you and there's always the chance you could pick up the blame. Car insurance is not always about who's right and who's wrong.

Yeah his dad may be able to afford it, but if he stuffs his dads M3, is he likely to be allowed back in the house again lol.

Ive not noticed it in my policy, but then ive never really looked, and all I use DOC for is to drive my other family members cars around, which amounts to a Mondeo, a Fiesta and a 406...

I totally agree, but it's a risk I'll take to test drive a £600 Megane or £1500 Punto. On a £5000 Mondeo or £9000 330i I'd get something sorted at least.

my sister got day insurance on a fiesta we went to see, was only £25 i think so not the end of the world.
the bloke was surprised when we told him we got insurance beforehand, he would have been happy for her to drive it.
just as well she was insured though, me and him were ****ing ourselves as she hadn't driven a rhd for over 3 and was rather close to the kerbs..

i test drove a 1.1 205 around south london without insurance. **** getting day insurance on that!
the kid we were buying it off just drove in front in his dad's S class, and i followed him

nothing hit, no harm done, car bought
and then she goes and spends £350 on fully comp on a £500 205 :/

So is speeding, so is eating whilst driving, so is not wearing a seatbelt, etc.... It's a risk but I'm not going to phone up and pay day insurance for a car which may be a wreck.

Eating while driving is not illegal.

And i see your point about the insurance and anything sub £1k u wiuld probably risk, but then again if i could add DoC for £25 i'd just do that to be honest.

What happens if someone rings to buy the car, doesn't want to see it, but wants the chasis number and will pay by bank transfer?

Can a bank transfer be reversed? i.e. scam?

hmm i never really looked in to DOC on my insurance as i have never had to use it. But i am looking into buying a car, so i took a look today.

Apparently I have to be over 25 in the UK and have the drivers permission. The only other note is that the car can't be owned by me or my partner, which is a clever stipulation.

I always wondered about this as my car is worth £400 max, I will be test driving up to £10k worth of car seems a bit unbalanced.

Just be sure not to crash it into someones 100k Farrari if you don't have DOC cover, the car your driving may be worth FA but you could hit something that costs a hell of a lot more.

When I sold my e38, I drove it for a couple of viewers, they could not prove comprehensive cover therefore they did not drive, no question.

The guy who bought it from me eventually, did not test drive it at all!

Personally, I would not buy without driving, that said, a brief test drive rarely uncovers what a month or two of ownership may reveal.....
