1999 Impreza, Project Track Car

Not thought that far ahead yet, going to get it going quick, stopping and handling first then look into improving the safety so no daft stuff until everything is sorted.

Any suggestions on decent cages?

I'm looking into cages for the Golf at the moment. As you probably know, they range from 6 point bolt in to a multipoint weld in. Prices range from £400 to about £1700  Custom cages have a few kits that you can weld/bolt in yourself that look good.

Going to be phoning a few places for more quotes this week and will update my golf thread when I decide.

Where did you order the seats from?

I've read your thread, superb stuff

I'll see what your conclusions are before I order anything.

Got my seats from here- http://www.sportseats4u.co.uk/

They havent arrived as they have only just been ordered, I'll report back if I experience any shoddy service.

Careful if you're putting a cage in, some insurers go a bit crazy when you mention roll cage.

Insurance isnt a problem, I've got a motor trade policy that covers any car.

So this is why I can't get booked in for an MOT, all you independant lot are too busy building track cars!! bahh!!;)

We're actually a main dealer but our workshops are always so busy they always look a bomb site.

Dont trust workshops that are all shiny and clean they cant be busy and will have to make ends meet by over charging ;)

Awesome, a new Project thread is just what Motors needs to get it feeling lively again :)

My new intercooler arrived today. Its absolutely huge :)

Had a few spare hours so managed to get it mounted, the pipe work will have to wait till I have an engine to attach them to. Apologies for some of the pictures being poor quality all so far have been taken with my moby. I'll start using a proper camera soon.

Now all the sound deadning is removed its the thankless task of getting all the glue and muck off in preperation for painting. The sound deadning from the floor filled two large bin bags which weighed a lot, The car is going to be a hell of a lot lighter by the time its finished.

Some clean shiny flooring, looking through from the boot.

Things are progressing quite nicely this week, the engine has arrived, the rolling road is booked for next Friday so I'll been working hard to find time to get everything ready.

Massive new Garrett MD400 turbo, had to modify the engine block to get it to fit!

Engine and gearbox refitted, now need to plumb it all in

ABS pump removed and new induction hole cut

A rather poor picture of the brake pipe re-routing minus ABS

Anyone got any advice on wether to wrap the exhaust headers with thermal lagging to keep engine compartment temprature down or should I just leave it?

I've heard some people argue for and against it so I've not made my mind up yet.

Is this all documented in 'real time', because if so you've pulled it all together extremely quickly.

Looking very good so far. :)

Thanks.

I've been at it about a month now, just fitting it in where possible, Its going to be a case of getting it up and running then taking my time on all the finishing touches.

I would lag them, I painted the lagging on my downpipe with HT paint to seal them up a bit and stop them absorbing water. Seems to have worked quite well.

Nice progress so far :)

Good stuff, seems to be coming along nicely

Your intercooler looks identical to the one I had on mine:

I miss that car :(

BTW what are you doing with regards to brakes? I had a 330mm Brembo GT setup on mine, and they were epic :D

Headers and up-pipe should be lagged to keep the heat where you want it - in the exhaust gas. Even if the induction has a source of cold air, you still want the exhaust gas to retain heat to maximise its volume (and thus power to turn the turbine blades). But real men use ceramic coatings (about £300 from Zircotec, the acknowledged masters). When you see oil-soaked header wrap catch fire you'll understand why.

Large FMIC's rock, that looks to be about the same size as mine. What make?
I went for a forge. motorsports unit. Compared to standard the differences between temps are night and day, on a warm day with 23 degrees external temperature I was only seeing around 10 degrees temperatre increase, with the old IC it was hitting 70 degrees and not cooling sufficiently and you could really feel the heat sapping energy from the engine.
Hope no one objects to a couple of pics.

Keep the pics and progress coming, I love watching these kinds of projects blossom from, well to be honest, sh1tters, into cracking track weapons.

Awesome, love project threads. I'm looking forward to after my student years where I'll have enough money to do something like this.

I'll get the lagging sorted before the dyno run next week, I dont want any excuses for not hitting 400 hp but I will post a genuine dyno print out whatever the out come.

Thats a cracking car there DreXeL, looks fairly heavily modded.

The Brembo 4 pot brake kit is ordered with 330mm godspeed groved discs and Ferodo pads, the 17" rims to fit over them arrived today.

I chose these -

Just a quick Q...how do you guys know how to tinker with engines (especially the OP) - are you a mechanic or?
