I saw this car race at Silverstone in 1981 in the hands of Derek Bell as support to the GP and it was one of the most memorable races I ever saw as he started from the back of a 30 odd car race and won! Epic battle with a Albert Orbist in a Ferrari 312 and I had lost track of it and couldn't find it in any of my references but this bloke mentions that actual race in video 2.

One for the race fans!

Thats not a project car, project car, like the word 'gay', has a new meaning these days. It used to mean a car such as the one you've posted, now it has replaced the term 'old banger'. A project car is a shabby shed you call a project to make yourself feel better.

Get with the times man!

I always think you get the wrong end of the stick when people use the word project. In my eyes, a project can be anything that requires several stages of work to eventually be in a state of competition. If someone has an 'old banger' which they are fixing up and requires quite a few different things that need doing then it is essentially a project.

OP: the 917 is an awesome car and beautiful shape, shame I wasn't even born, the experience of that race sounds awesome Housey!

It was 10 years after the 917 finished in front line racing and was a historic support race to the 1981 British GP at Silverstone. Bell was epic and rung the neck of the thing like no one does today, he drove it like it was driven in the 1970/71 season and that is why it was so special. The car was Silver and due to I think failing to qualify had to start at the back of the grid. Orbist in the 312 was (I think) a rich Swiss businessman and an able peddler but Bell tracked him down and about 5 laps from the end went past him, at which point his brakes started to fail and the 312 was back on his tail. Bell won, by less than a second and it was epic due to Bell coming through the pack, racing with Orbist and also to see a 917 lapping close to the times it would do back in the day.

Breathtaking stuff and stuck in my mind.

Porsche actually built a road going version for Count Rossi of the Martini drinks company which he used as his road car for a while!

I totally agree, it's pure snobbery.

Project
–noun
1. something that is contemplated, devised, or planned; plan; scheme.
2. a large or major undertaking, esp. one involving considerable money, personnel, and equipment.
3. a specific task of investigation, esp. in scholarship.
4. Education. a supplementary, long-term educational assignment necessitating personal initiative, undertaken by an individual student or a group of students.
5. Often, projects. housing project.

I can't see anything above that specifically excludes restoring/modifying old sheds?
