Scientist Hawking ill in hospital

Leading scientist Stephen Hawking is "very ill" in hospital, his employer Cambridge University has said.

A spokesman said Professor Hawking was undergoing tests at Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge.

The spokesman said the 67-year-old, who has motor neurone disease, had "been unwell for a couple of weeks".

Prof Hawking has worked at the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics at Cambridge University for more than 30 years.

Prof Hawking, who speaks with the aid of a voice synthesiser, has three children and one grandchild.

He became a CBE in 1982 and a Companion of Honour in 1989.

Prof Peter Haynes, head of the University's Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics, said: "Professor Hawking is a remarkable colleague.

"We all hope he will be amongst us again soon."

Personally I'm surprised he's lasted as long as he has, tip my hat to him, one of the greatest minds mankind has proven.

Oh ****! :(

He's one of the smartest people to have graced the planet, and seemingly keeps going on when almost everybody else in his condition (+age) has failed.

Let's hope he pulls through! A living legend if ever there was one.

I honestly had no idea he was 67! All things considered, he really doesn't look it.

Nearly 40 years with Motor Neurones disease is a major achievement in itself - my Nan lasted 15 years with that nasty illness and was considered extraordinary by the Doctors for surviving that long and living a self-sufficient, independant lifestyle until just a few weeks before she passed away.

Hope they can help Dr Hawking, but wouldn't be surprised if it's finally caught up with him.

:(

I hope he gets better but, tbh 67 is a pretty good age for someone that has nothing wrong with them. I just hope he hasn't any unfinished work that would have truly changed our science as we know it.

It's always a terrible shame to lose a person with such great knowledge, there's no telling what he could produce in the next 30 years if he continued to live.

Hope he gets better :)

I wonder what he is like as a lecturer...anyone met him or been taught by him?

My dissertation lecturer was at a talk and one of the topics was given by him - was a long time ago before he got ill.

This is a really terrible thing and I do hope he pulls through, a truly fantastic mind and a man with such spirit he hasn't given up in the face of true adversity.
