Hi all. My daughter is looking for a (second hand) motor and has seen a Citroen Saxo. Anybody know what they are like. I've never owned any Citroen and don't know anyone else who has.

If she is looking at one of the hot ones (VTR/VTS), and is a bit of a petrol head, then they are fantastic things, very easy to chuck around and have awesome handling dynamics and driver feedback.

If she is just wanting an A-B car and doesn't really take an interest in cars, then you can do a lot better, as they aren't the most reliable (although cheap to fix), aren't the best made, and certainly offer near to no crash protection at all.

As much as I loved my VTR, I'd never recommend a saxo to someone just wanting a reliable A-B town car, yet I'd pimp them all day long to someone who is looking for a fun little car to throw around B roads.

Fiestas are better.

I'd avoid the 1.3 and 1.4 though. The 1.3 is old and crap and the 1.4 offers no real performance advantage over the 1.25 and the 1.4 is prone to bottom end trouble.

If you want something exciting I'd be inclined to take a VTR/VTS over a Dagenham Dustbin.

Well no, that would depend on the desired use of the car.

As a town car, yes, a Fiesta is better. As a driver involving B-road blaster, no.

Sweeping statements = lose.

I hate Saxos fullstop. VTR, VTS, VTX, VTP, whatever model.

They could be cracking cars but I hate the association that comes with Saxo ownership ;)

Gotta agree with the ownership thing, but they are really good fun, a few mates have VTRs/Ss and they're all really nippy, i just don't like cars that fall apart that much, the Punto has given me enough of that :D

Much better off with a Fiesta for town driving.

There are worse cars out there, but I think steering her towards a Polo or Fiesta would be a better option if she doesn't want a sporty version.

I was going to suggest the same as lopez with the polo, I think they may be a little more expensive but from what I know of them they are far better built and have a few more luxuries with being a bit newer as a moel.

Saxo's are starting to show their age really IMO.

For a town car a 1.25 fiesta is a much better prospect, my saxo was only a few years old when things started to drop off and go wrong i'd hate to see what state these are in now!

Nextdoor neighbour has a P plate Polo and they are the sort of people who drive cars until they grind to a halt, dead at the roadside. So far apart from an exhaust middle box and a dodgy wiring issue (the loom for the lights had come out of it's clip and the fan had cut through the wires!) it's been flawless over the last couple of years.

Why not get a fiesta zetec s?

My mates got a saxo and I've got a fiesta. From my experience, mine's superior in every way. Better acceleration, better handling and saxos are just about the most disgusting cheap looking chav cars in history.

:D

...in your opinion.

you seem to forget that part ;)
