Anyone here work for / flown with Thomas Cook?

They usually weigh it at the check in desk. Take your heavy stuff out and have whoever takes you to the airport hold onto your stuff whilst you check in. After checking in pick up your stuff an go through security ;)

I've flown with lots of different airlines, and never once had carry-on luggage weighed.

They might notice when it goes through the scanner that it is full of equipment though, and if so they would weigh it at that point.

Airport operators don't enforce weight restrictions, it's the airline who only do it at the check in.

Well in that case it won't be weighed. You could check-in early, then nip out to your car and get it from the boot, then head straight through security.

I flew with Thomas Cook last week, they didn`t weigh any hand luggage but they did have a device to make sure it didn't exceed their height/depth restrictions. They were quite rigid with the baggage though. We were only allowed 15kgs each but they will weigh both suitcases together. Hope that helps.

Airlines generally don't weigh carry on luggage, the weight limit is there to stop people taking obsenely heavy bags so as long as it doesn't look too heavy they won't look at it twice (if you are heaving it up or bending against it on your back then they probably will).

And on a side note that is why I hate camera bags, they are way too heavy for no real reason. Get a 20-30L normal bag and stick it all in there with a bit of padding on the bottom and front and stick the tripod in the hold (both of what I do), then get yourself a couple of extra cards from your shop so no need for the laptop (although I generally try and take mine). That should reduce it to much closer to the limit, then if you are really paranoid take out all the batteries and stick them in the hold too. :)

I'm flying with another airline in 2 months and have checked into carryon baggage - a laptop counts seperately, so remove it from your bag if you are worried.

i'm already taking a fair amount of cards with me, but they get bloody expensive! RAW files are 30mb a pop so even 16gb cards dont go very far.

To Fox, there is no seperate allowance for laptops with Thomas Cook either, it's ONE item per person. I don't think ill be using them again :|

my friend is a pilot for them and reckons they never weigh hand luggage, but he also said you never know what the check-in people will do as their own personal policy.

obviously dont make it look heavy :p

I wouldnt fly with them anyway, 30" seat pitch, seems pretty awful. Especially for somebody tall like yourself.

Flew with them last July to Mexico didn't weigh our hand luggage or even check the size.

Same, but flew to Cuba twice with them (albeit on premium seating, drank them dry of rum :p), three times to Turkey, and once to Italy and they never checked the hand luggage at all...

The hold luggage on the other hand.... :) managed to blag a few extra kilos more than once, helps having diving equipment with me :)

Then you'll have to do what I have done the last couple of times, be ruthless! In the evening or during quiet periods delete copies and slightly substandard images and only be left with the best couple of hundred at the end of the trip.:p

I came back with around 250 images from my trips to Death Valley and Sicily but took probably around 600 overall. It feels horrible, but you do have the benefit of not having to sort through the rubbish when you get back.:)

Are you sure?

I've never had so much room in economy as I had with them on my trip to Canada. The plane was old but the seat pitch was incredibly generous. I'm 6'4 and usually have lots of problems. That's the main reason why I'm flying with them again!

Yup, just double checked - 30" on the entire fleet except for some reason the 757-200's to Canada which appear to have an enormous 35"

Edit: Seems Seatguru is less reliable than I thought as it doesn't even mention the A330's they have

even if its weighed
if you can afford that camera you can afford the excess baggage

it's a business tool, that can be used for pleasure too :p

also, you can't pay for excess hand luggage, it's a finite number. You can only purchase more allowance for hold luggage :(

I plan on arriving early and blagging or if need be paying extra for an exit seat, but even that failing it's only a 3.5 hour flight, as long as I get up and walk around a bit i'll be fine.

Again you should have gone Easyjet and paid for the speedyboarding, you would have got exit seats then ;)

Although last week I flew to Geneva with them and still got exit seats despite getting on towards the back of the queue each time.

I fly to Gambia twice a year with them and have been for 8 years.

Not once have I had my hand luggage weighed.

you can pay for exit seats, but at £75 each way im gonna risk it :)

Tom.

I've flown with TC a few times, and I've family who work for them - discretion is the key. Don't advertise the fact you are carrying heavy hand luggage - get your main luggage weighed as per normal, and leave your hand luggage by your feet. I've never had hand luggage weighed in all the times I have flown. Providing the hand luggage doesn't look overly cumbersome you should be okay.

Exit seats are a good idea too - I'm 6ft 8 and always have to pre-book them where possible.
