It seems quite a lot of people around my way are getting Disabled bays in front of their houses, but I'm sure that not that many people are physically incapable of walking back to their house if they can't park outside...

What sort of checks are made when people apply for these, as there's a guy around the corner who's had one painted in, but he's a full-time Bus driver... I'm a bit  over the whole thing?

Is this the new way of guaranteeing a parking space outside your house? Just get one painted in and hobble about a bit when you leave the car? :D

its one of those things that can be taken advantage of.
my brother in law has had a hip replacement and has a disabled bay marked out (he is 30!) yet he still works as a truck mechanic doing quite physical work

The house opposite me has got one outside theirs.. Was only commenting at the weekend about how you go about getting one! :)

someone told me there was nothing they could do if you park in it, is this true?

It is only enforceable if there is a sign on the verge stating restriction and the relevant traffic regulation order in place to support it as far as i know. Can check tomorrow at work....

Regardless, your car is likely to be keyed by the person the bay was originally put in for ;)

Yer lol but if you park in someones disabled bay you deserve it. Alternatively if they are blagging it try and get your own one. Oh and shop em as they are probably claiming disabled benefits somewhere too.

Does he get anything like Mobility Allowance, or have ongoing problems with his hips/gait or pain whilst walking? (if you don't mind me asking)

You can have a fairly "physical" job and still get a blue badge if you have problems with walking, but aren't eligable for mobility (you can get one if you don't get higher rate mobility if your doc agrees you need it).
You can even, as I understand it, potentially be in receipt of higher rate mobility and still hold down a job as a HGV driver, if you're otherwise ok, and suitable arrangements/modifications are made to the vehicle (such as a drivers mate and an automatic transmission/hand controls for the brakes/accelerator).

IIRC generally to get a disabled bay you have to have proof that someone living at the address has a blue badge (you can get one with no problem if you're in receipt of DLA Mobility componant, or depending on region if your doc signs off on it).
You also must not have access to other off road parking at the address (no garage/driveway etc).
I think in some cases you also have to nominate the vehicle to be parked there, and it has to be registered to the address.

I am an HGV driver and , if I wanted too, I could apparently claim a whole host of benefits.

I have a hole in my heart and deformed hands (see pic), neither of which particularly affects my day to day life at all. I did have major hassle convincing the DVLA and subsequent driving examiners that I could drive a non-automatic despite my stumps (which I have had from birth btw) and I only drive an automatic car currently through choice rather than any kind of need.

Funnily enough, I drive automatic trucks these days too!

Despite this imo crazy situation (I regard myself as non-disabled) I don't claim a thing.

Many of my mates & colleagues have told me I'm crazy for not "screwing the system for every bean I can get" I guess I like to look in the mirror in the morning & like what I see (assuming I don't break it with my non Brad Pitt looks! :D )

What really hacks me off is two "disabled" bays outside my house, both occupied by people whom to my eyes are a lot more able bodied than I i.e. not at all disabled.

Whilst I try not to park in the spaces, I do smile when my visiting friends do. :D

I should have registered here as "Stumpy" :o :p

he doesnt have a blue badge iirc, never noticed one atleast. doent get mobility allowance.
yep, nominated car to be parked there only and no other access.

the pain is nothing like it used to be before the operation (and funnily enough that was less pain than what my wife gets from her hip apparently!).

.

I have just been told that the disabled bay is actually from the previous occupants of the house, it isn't specifically his.
he hasn't asked for a blue badge yet either.

The child I look after is severely physically disabled, and because we have a driveway, they wont let us have a disabled bay outside the house (which is fair enough) but due to the amount of cars that park with little or no regard for the width of the driveway the council have said we can have double yellow lines painted over the driveway, to try and discourage people from parking so that we cant get in or out.

They're painting them when some work in the street opposite gets done.
