Fat Tax on Ryanair

Wait, 100kg is 15.7473044 stone.

Almost everyone I know that is >5'8" and goes to the gym is almost that weight, let alone baggage.

Actually yeah, 100kg may be slightly low, say 120kg?

Goes to the gym? You mean bodybuilds. Although some people may fork out more to go but I disagree that I should be confined to 15-20kg baggage when i weigh 2-5st less than someone else.

(I'm actually semi serious about this, it makes sense to charge heavier people, who will use more fuel.)

If your overall weight is more then you pay an excess weight charge, easyjet and ryanair already allow you to add excess weight onto your baggage so it wouldn't be too difficult to impliment.

Sorry yes, I meant those that weight-train.

Everything about Ryanair screams cheap. I'll never fly with them because I value my life, health and mental wellbeing :p

Easyjet on the other hand is a fantastic company, doing budget travel the way it should be done far as I'm concerned - cheap, efficient, and cheery. Oh and hot young air hostesses ;)

I have to agree with that to an extent, although they can be a bit underhand with their 'extra' charges too sometimes. At least they don't have the frankly ridiculous 15kg baggage allowance.

I was on a Ryanair flight back from Dublin a few hours ago and it wasn't any different from any other airline I've ever been on. The staff were friendly, we got great seats that somehow loads of people didn't notice (emergency exits over the wings have double leg room) and we landed on time despite a late departure.

The idea of smaller people getting more luggage wouldn't work on Ryanair since they charge to check a bag in. I'd say 90% of my flight home had large bags for hand luggage to avoid the charge, in fact I'm not sure I saw anyone stop at the baggage claim!

All the ryanair "cheap flight" malarkey is ruined by the fact that most of the time you have to add tax on top. Then everytime you must add £5 for checking in online, or else £20 if you're taking luggage. So annoying.

They are doing nothing of the sort - it's a controversial press release designed to create media furore and boost the profile of Ryanair as being 'so cheap'.

I said that when O'Leary speculated on the toilet charge. I honestly didn't see the charge coming I thought it was media hype.

I think everyone knows where they stand with Ryanair, however I just keep getting <£20 flights to Budapest. Mind I had to pay €600 for a flight to Budapest once so lets hope there will always be competition in the European air space scene.

They can charge what they want, I'm not flying with them anyway.

Last time I flew was business class on JAL and at the moment the next time I fly will be the same.

This company does seem to strike me as an airline for the chav element and I have no plans to travel with them at all.

I still can't decide whether I admire the chutzpah of Ryanair or whether they're just a bunch of money grabbing tools - on balance I think probably the latter but they can be good for a cheap laugh every so often.

£20 to check in luggage ?!

I can see it's a cost, staff have to load it, but for that much you could ship your bags to the hotel in advance and save money :)

It’s a joke, in the real world it would be called discrimination. Who cares, don’t fly with them and never will.

You pay £10 to check in luggage. If you're checking in luggage you can't use the £5 online checkin and have to pay the £10 checkin fee. Hence £20

I will celebrate wildly when Ryanair go out of business.

But Micheal O'Leary is such a brilliant buissnessman this just isn't going to happen!

Take september 2001, post 9/11, loads of airlines cancelled there plane orders with boeing, so he went along and said i'll take them at half the asking price, and boeing said yes!

He says what he means and doesn't talk nonsense to the press. and he also knows exactly how to get peoples money.

If you are travelling on ryanair, book well in advance, decline to take their insurance, check in online and have hand luggage only, it is increadible cheap. I've flown all over europe and paid £0.01 each way or taxes only etc.

It would not suprise me if he charged the obese, he already charges the stupid! - If you are going somewhere with hold luggage and are not web litterate it can cost you a fortune. As you will accept their insurance about £10 each way, you will pay to check in inthe airport £8 each way iirc, you wont have remebered to pay for a bag £20 pound to check in at the airport. your bag will be overweight (now €25 a kg i think), the list goes on. whcih means you can end up paying more than £100 ontop of your flight and taxes if you dont know what you are doing, which is very clever buisness if somewhat unethical!

Agreed, I had a long weekend in Barcelona for £17 return.
All I needed was my pack which I took on the plane with me.

The bus fare from the airport to Barcelona was more expensive than the flight! You can have that carbon footprint and eat it!

You don't have to buy any of the extras, and I've traveled both Ryan Air and Easyjet and neither is 'more comfortable' than the other. Ryan Air just has a somewhat more garish colour scheme on board and the annoying adverts selling suff.

I hope they go out of business. I haven't flown with them for a good year or so even though Prestwick airport is only 15 minutes away. I think their business ethics are disgusting.
