Hi Guys,

I've got a friend who needs a new computer as soon as, but doesn't want to spend a lot of money. Could you put together a spec for her, including OS and Monitor, and also a wireless PCI Card.

Use is basic, it'll be for college work and internet mainly.

Thanks

Here's one I've posted before: some of the components are fairly generic (RAM, DVD drive) so you can swap them to any other similar item easily enough.

One big change is to swap the E2200 for an E5200 - I originally specced this for a competitor site and the E5200 was more expensive there.

Then just add in this monitor for £90 and either vista home basic or home premium for £76 or £92 and either this usb wireless dongle for £12 or this pci card for £13

Total price:
£434 to £451
You could save a little by getting a £17 montor frome somewhere else for perhaps £65, or if you use linux as the OS (obviously if she's willing)

My offering :)

That's about as cheap and dirty as you'll get with stuff that's in stock, and without dropping down to Vista basic.

You could always work upwards from there.

EDIT: Silly me, forgot a hard drive. It's in now.

yeas but this is the same price and is better quality...not Hiper :)

*Shrug* some people don't seem to mind Hiper. Personal preference I guess, I've never had a Hiper so I wouldn't know.

That spec was pretty much built using the first thing in each category after sorting by price and checking for stock, The price might go sideways but it shouldn't go down without dipping into the B-Grade. I'm sure swinnie will want to tinker with all of the offers anyway, if this ladyfriend of his doesn't like the case, etc.

There's cheap, and too cheap :-)

I went for the Corsair PSU because it's about the first one I'd trust - the Antec Basic I'd guess would be okay, but it's too close to being an "included with case" for my liking.

Get home basic, not home premium - there's not enough of a difference to care: does your friend really give a crap whether the title bar of her windows are translucent and that the windows sort of "slide" to the start bar, or would she appreciate a £20 note more?

Nice range of £400-450 builds there - not bad at all and it's nice to see a thread where every other post doesn't contain "but you should spent some more on this, it's so leet" :-P

well for college its probably more likely to be useful to have something that can be carried around, I suppose you could add a hostess trolley and she can cart the PC to classes :)
