Soaking amp in isopropyl, likely to damage?

Hello, all

I really need to give my amp a good clean out...especially the tone defeat and loudness buttons as they're really beginning to crackle. I'm hoping it's just the dirt in the switches that's causing the problem although I'll see about replacing the switches if the clean out fails.

Am I best to just clean the switches as best I can or would it do any harm to soak the whole amp in a bath of isopropyl for a while? It could do with it.

The amp is a Nakamichi AV10, just in case that may help.

Thanks.

Give it a good dust out with some compressed air and a good soak on the pots with Switch Cleaner. IPA will dissolve any silicon thermal compound on heatsinks to amps etc.

Good point. I hadn't even remembered it was good for that as well.

I wouldn't bother, isoproponol will probably get stuck in the relays and toroid... Use the proper stuff. :)

Which would you recommend then? By "proper stuff" do you mean the isopropyl or something else?

Thanks for the replies. :D The right channel's been cutting out and crackling as a result of the tone defeat switch and hopefully I can sort it without having to send it for a service. At 16kg it would cost a fair bit for the postage let alone the cost of the parts and service.

Contact cleaner. You only need to put it in the pots and switches, and if they are still bad, it would be best to replace offending pots/switches.:)

PA amps get filled with so much gunk over the the years I've had to do this many times...
