As title really. I have a speech impedement and I don't believe it is bad enough to go and see a speech therapist over. I have googled and youtube'd for help and have not found much in the way of what i need.

Have any of you got speech impedements or know of any good techniques which can be found online and carried out at home?

Would be interesting to see how many people have speech impedements and I hope that others can find this thread of use for discussing or getting help.

Thanks.

Whappers.

Taking a vow of silence can cure your impedement.

Seriously though, my aunt is a speech therapist and when she has babbled on at me about the different techniques/theories/methods, I have had to fall asleep - there are so many variables and it is very complex.

I do know however that if you feel that you are going to sneeze (and you dont particularly want to), saying "asparagus" should halt the sneezing action - something to do with how the air is channelled. However, you will end up looking more of an idiot than if you had just sneezed.

Salut!

What would be the best way to go and see a speech therpist? I mean, should I give the NHS a call on one of their many helplines or go and see my GP

Give NHS Direct (0845 46 47) a ring and see what they say. You might find that they will tell you to go and see your GP so that he/she can refer you. However, I'm not entirely sure your GP needs to refer you so going to see them first of all might be a waste of time (yours and theirs).

NHS direct generally always seem to either say, go to hospital or go see your GP. I reckon youd go a to a GP so that they can refer you to who ever they need to. Didn't realise that thing could be available on the NHS, i guess if it is causing you ' discomfort ' and ruining your life then i see why

Rather than thinking you don't need a specialist - go see one anyways. They might see something you didn't see or they might allow you a couple of appointments and give you homework to do. Then they'll be able to tell you if they've helped. You are going to be biased on it but a proffesional opinion will help.

I'm not sure what lines you went down but when I was in hospital there were quite a few speech therapists and presumably when the patient nmbers become better they have time to spare.

How do you know what NHS Direct will say?

I say rather than potentially wasting the GP's time, make a quick phone call.

NHS direct won't be much help on this. It's def a trip to see your gp if you want it on the NHS. I would happily, and have happily referred adults to speech therapists in the past, so just give your GP a call.

Thanks. I take it you are a GP then?

Trying to get a gp to refer you to anyone is like trying to get blood out of a stone these days.

Go and see your GP and see if you can get referred. My Mrs did a two year MSc to learn the basic skills so I'd be surprised whether you can self-diagnose and fix the problem yourself. Speech therapists are invariably lovely people, too!
