Is a Nvidia 260 (216) a decent upgrade from a overclocked 4850?

That's an interesting site - is it just maximum framerates though?

To be honest, most of those numbers wouldn't make me want to bother spending £160 to upgrade. The increase really isn't worth it.

i agree, well it's only going to cost half that by the time he sells his 4850 but even still i don't think it is worth it - games with too low fps are still too low and instead of getting 65fps you will get 75-80 ...woop woop.

spend the extra 40 pounds for a 4890 and clock it to 950mhz on the core, then it's probably worth the effort or just grab another 4850.

Let's not forget I am using a £300 Dell Inspiron here :D I have changed the cpu to a E8400 and I am now using a 400w modular psu. I have no option to go with SLI, not that I want to. I'm trying to keep things within a tight budget, hence the Dell in the first place. I think the 260 will be the perfect upgrade. I like the fact it is quieter than the 4850 too.

Make sure your case will take the length of the 260.

hi there sorry to crash this thread didn't want to make another one as I have a similar question...:) I currently have a powercolor radeon 4850 512mb which runs at native res 1440x900, now its a great card but im just curious as to weather the 260 would give me a better long term solution, the processor is a [email protected] would waiting till the dx11 cards be more advisable at this comparatively low res?

yeah i thought as so, strangely ive been playing fallout 3 and get average 60fps all max settings but still get some funny stuttering in it..possibly the game but its odd

So what about overclocked GTX280?

What about it? Overclocked it beats a GTX285. Point is it's emd of line and places you can still find it for sale is more than £245 (cheapest I can find online).

Okay there are 2n hand ones about but same is true of GTX260.

I don't see the point you are trying to make? Are you suggesting the GTX280 for £100 more than a GTX260 but about 5--10% quicker is a better buy?

I think he's pointing out that while an overclocked 260 matches a 280, surely if you had a 280 you would overclock it.

Anyahoot, I have a 4850 at the moment but my 2 month old xfx 260gtx should arrive tomorrow, so will be interesting to see what boost I get from it on my 20" screen (especially on crysis!)

As Greebo pointed out, have sold my 4850 for £85 and got the 260 for £125 so after sending out my card should work out at about a £45 upgrade :)
