I googled this and I'm failry sure the answer is no but its worth a double check!!

Just wanted to know can I take out a BTX mobo and stick in an ATX or will it require tapping a new thread into the case?

I have a Dell E520 case right now and to be honest its possibly the best part of this system, I don't really want to splash out on a new case and not really in a modding mood (but thats always a possibility if one will fit).

But this PC wont even run the sims 2 smoothly and it seems the cheapest CPU upgrade i can get is about £120 for a dual core intel, if I can do it i'll just get a new mobo and an AMD X2 7750+ Black ED or similar, anything should run my games better than this cruddy Intel Celron D poop!

So yeah if you can help me out here I'll give you cookies!

Dells are a pain to upgrade, id look at a second hand E6600 which can be had for £20-£30.

Yeah, I'm starting to regret swapping this for my old rig with my sister lol, I had a barton XP 3200+ a gig of Geil and a radeon HD something or other (not a fan of ATI cards!)

Where would I get a 2nd hand one from? a large auction site?

Auction sites may be your best bet, yes. There is a members market on here but you need to have 250 posts and 90 days membership to access.

However, I doubt you'll find an E6600 for £20-30, more like £40-50.

Found one going for £70 on a large auction site just not sure if I want to risk £70 on a possible tea coaster :) might be worth buying one new i think they are around £120

Well don't buy a new E6600, they're old tech now. At that sort of money you'd be close to quad territory anyway.

Could save yourself some cash and go for an E5200, which would be better, though not sure about what mainboard you have and whether overclocking would be possible.

OCing is locked on the mobo, dell dont like people messing.. I think it makes them nervous.

Just looking for a CPU that will run things like the sims, WoW, NWN2 and possibly fallout 3 smoothly, currently when you get so far into the sims (big house etc) it starts lagging and frame rates die.
Some CPUZ screens here

I would see if you could find out what processors that board is compatible with before you buy a new one, it looks fairly low-end to me. Not sure, but the dell website may help.

Yeah been there, no official word on support for anything more than this which I found on a forum post in a google search.

Edit: Forgot to mention I've also found a post where people have been flashing their bios to the newest firmware and being able to run a Q6600 on this mobo..

I also have a Dell E520 and every day I regret the choice I made when buying it. I have upgraded the gfx card to a HD 3850 and that made it last an extra year and a half or so, but now I'm wanting to play top end games and it just plain fails. Your best bet is getting a new rig all together imho, that's what I'm going to and it seems to be the most plausable and futureproof route. I don't have the money at the moment and I won't for a while so i'm stuck there too :)
Good luck, you'll need it :D

Damn you Dell!

I'm considering tapping new threads into the case to fit an ATX mobo but will need to see if theres enough room later, ether that or buy a cheap case CPU and mobo, I just spent about 80 quid on it putting a GF 9500gt and 2 gigs of ram into it, I have 2 spare 500W PSU's sitting around so might just spend the extra get a decent motherboard to allow for future upgrades, but now I'm looking at AM3 mobos that (i think) are backwards compatable with AM2/AM2+ and hooking all of it up then upgrading bit by bit till I have a good rig.

I hate missing out on things like Crysis and S.T.A.L.K.E.R I managed to play a little stalker on my old rig but AGP GPU wasnt upto the job for long.
