Hi all, I am hoping to get some advice from you guys about buying a used car...

Today I went to test drive a Lupo GTi and even paid £100 to hold the car as I liked it so much, but I am struggling to get the sales guy to nudge on the asking price of £6500. I still need to confirm tomorrow whether I am going to buy the car or not, but this depends if they are willing the carry out the repairs that I am asking them to do.

The car is 2003 registered, 03 plate, under 34k miles, 1 owner, full VW dealer service history except for the last sevice which was done by an independent garage. The sevice book doesnt indicate that the cambelt has been changed, the front tyres are worn down to around 2mm tread and the alloys are scuffed up pretty badly.

The sales guy responsible for this car said he needs to check the car tomorrow (as he was not at the showroom today, I spoke to him over the phone), and that he will confirm to me whether the cambelt and tyres need changing, and whether the alloys need refurbishing - if so, then this will all be done at the asking price of £6500 (including MOT, but he refuses to pay for road tax plus a full tank of petrol!!)

Now I'm not an expert with used cars, so i'm not sure if this is a reasonable price or not.. what do you guys think?

I currently own a lupo already (53 plate).. but its a bog standard 1.4E with no electric windows no nothing!!! I want the Lupo GTi so badly but if it means paying much more than I should then i'd rather lose out on the £100 I paid and move on to finding something better....

Any advice appreciated thanks! :)

He's not going to budge because you've given him money to keep it for you so he knows you like the car. You should have made him budge on the price before handing any cash over.

Why bother putting a holding deposit on a car that your not really happy about in a few areas, and the prices is seemingly un-moveable?

Daft!

£6500 for a 6 year old lupo in iffy condition!!!!?!!?!??!?!!:eek::eek:

It's worth closer to 3 or 4k in good nick...

You've been had - you're not going to see your £100 but its better than paying several grand over the odds for the car.

Next time, do your research into what a car is worth and dont feel pressured into paying a deposit until you're happy with the negotiated price and what's included.

Lupo GTIs are good cars however they go for silly money second hand. Having a very quick look around 5.5-6k does seem to be the going rate for one in good condition around that age despite what parkers says. So the price isn't out of the world assuming the dealer refurbs the wheels/new tyres and does the timing belt which is due if it has not been done as its 4years or 60k on these engines and important as the tensioners are prone to failing, they should as change the tensioners and water pump with the belt. You would be able to save a 1k or so buying privately. It is still crazy money for a 6 year old Lupo.

Have you test driven a Clio 182 ? Its faster, handles a little better and you can get a newer example for your money.

Oops. Anyway, my point is there's loads about without paying silly prices.

Really? There are 11 GTi's on Autotrader across the entire UK, the cheapest being a high mileage 2001 at £3500. Where have you noticed loads of sale at non-silly prices?

These little cars are obscenely expensive for what you get, but if the OP wants a low mileage example she's going to have to pay the kind of stupid prices being asked for them. There simply aren't many around (probably because they were far too expensive when new).

Even if they are going for 6k upwards, its still silly money for a something like that. You could buy a CAR for that money...

The point of this thread is that the OP WANTS a Lupo GTi.

They are certainly not a choice for everybody, but there is no denying that they are a great fun little car to drive - you get a great sense of speed combined with go-kart handling.

Yes, they are around 5-6k. They are expensive for what they are. But if the OP is not doing massive amounts of mileage or motorway cruising, and simply wants a fun little car that seems to hold its value quite well, then theres not that much wrong!
