Ok, so in preperation for sitting outside of a summer evening.....

Whats better? Firepit or Chimnea?

So, anyone have one? thoughts?

I'm thinking these are a bit nicer than electric/gas patio heaters as they have a bit more character... and boys love playing with fire right?

So does the firepit have more merits than the chimnea, or vice versa?

IME neither are very good and are fairly uneconomical.

I use a couple of those, and they work brilliantly.

Doesn't really have the same character tho does it?
Not something you can sit around with friends as it gets dark and talk over the flames, toast marshmallows etc?

We used to have a chimnea but someone stole it. Who the hell steals a chimnea? If you're going to steal something, at least steal something that's worth more than £50 and weighs less than 100lbs. Heck, even the patio chairs are worth more and weigh less.

A firepit is better to sit around but a chimnea is better for burning things as all the smoke is directed up and away from your eyes. Also, a chimnea is less likely to go out if it gets windy, but if you get a good fire going, it won't matter which one you have. Both keep you warm though. Not as much as a patio heater, but then you can't toast marshmellows in a patio heater (unless you opened the top I suppose). :p

Chimneas and firepits are also cheaper to run, if you're willing to contribute to global warming. Just burn your rubbish in it.

We used to burn allsorts in the chimnea. I remember turning it round so the opening was facing away, and dropping deoderant cans in the top. The flame that comes out the side is awesome.

firepit, but not the one you showed. I'm building my own firepit when the damn house is finished with full seating area - can't wait!

Depends; .... if you have easy access to them/sight etc they/it will get nicked in a very short time, unless you have somewhere secure to store them/it.

You pays ya money and takes ya chance.

Whoa, nice thread timing. I was fixing my fence today and gazed across at my neighbours firepit, thinking "that looks cool, I'll take a look into those".

I burnt my face on a patio heater on saturday, i sat abit close to it but didn't think anything of it till i got home, looked in the mirror and was bright red lol :(

It was all hurty on sunday :(

Garden is secure enough not to worry about it going walkies.

I like the idea of the firepit, but I'd want to cover it when not in use so it doesn't fill up with water and rust etc. But I can't find any covers designed for firepits, yet I can find covers for chimneas etc.

Glad I could help :D

We have a small chimnea which is perfect for a small gathering or when there is just the two of us, also it is pretty much free to run as we just colect off cuts from peoples skips and bits left over from DIY/Gardening. It is definately not as effective as a gas patio heater but fire is by definition much cooler and we can toast of few marshmallows!

In what way Huddy? Which would be better for kids then? I'm guessing the upright patio heaters are better for kids, but as above I prefer something with a bit more involvement/character.
