How High Must Garages Mark Up Be?

Slightly off at a tangent but a mate has just been offered £35K for his lovely 996 GT3RS which I suspect would not be up for anything less than £65K on their forecourt. Should give you an insight into OPC's markups...

The thing is though, in the current climate what the forecourt sticker price is and what the car eventually goes for can be two very different figures. At the moment you're lucky if you're offered anything over bottom book price, and that's mainly because the dealer is scared that he gets raped by the punter over the asking price.
Dealers are in the game to buy low and sell high, but I'd bet heavily that they won't make anything that even resembles almost doubling their money on your friends Porka.

I tend to know most of the good 996 GT3 RS's out there, I am not aware of a single car that has sold for less than £50K this year....private included.

Or worded differently, you don't know ALL of the good ones never mind all examples of this model. As I said the dealers are offering bottom book prices, ie the prices the bad/average cars are worth. These cars are more in demand than mass produced marques, but the credit scrunch has affected every corner of the market.

I am well aware what the market is doing right now, only an idiot would miss that and I am also aware that OPC's are taking the pee currently with their trade in values (the basis of my point) as I know what they offered me for my RS4. I also know what the CURRENT going rate is for the 996 GT3 RS is as I am considering buying one and rest assured £35K is taking the pee, not least when they are pushing to get you into a brand new GT2 as they were we said person and taking into account OPC 'profit'. Find me a solid and good provinance 996 GT3RS for £45K and I'll buy it. ALL the best ones are still £55K over...FACT but feel free to prove me wrong as I'll be interested.

Sounds like the same Castrol Stuff as I use. £175? You have to be kidding.

Edit: Just checked on the Castrol site, you need Edge 5W30 for the RS6. From what I've seen this is actually cheaper than the 0w30 Edge I bought, and I paid £55 for 9 litres of it!

The Edge 5W30 is only £45 for 4 litres, same price as the 0W30 (opieoils).

It depends how you define "take the pee".
The dealer is throwing the thick end of 40k into buying a car that he may have on his forecourt for considerable time, given the current climate. In times like this the old adage "cash is king" is more relevant than ever. Now is a good time to go bargain hunting on everything from an Xbox to a Porsche, as the principle is the same, but luxury goods like the Porsche simply aren't shifting as they were. The car (and therefore the money the dealer has tied up in it) is doing nada until it sells and it's this that forces dealers into, let's be honest, insultingly low offers for reasons of cashflow and to take advantage of punters who need to sell. For example, one of our warehouse lads has a '53 plate Zafira that he wanted to p/ex at a dealer against a new Insignia. He whored it around half a dozen dealers who all said no bar one.....who offered him £700. The salesman went on to say that his best option would be to strip it for parts and sell it on the bay of E. Of course the GT3 has more of a niche market, but it's target audience is suffering the same as everyone else.

BS. If you were well off before this mess started, I'm pretty sure you are still well off. The people "suffering" right now are the middle to low income people; who have potentially been made redundant (or maybe their partner has been).

Anyone shopping for a GT3 is probably making ATLEAST 60k a year and is in no way feeling any "pain" from this downturn.

My friends dad has an M3 and is on well over £150k for the government. He's been told in 6 months he will not have a job, lucky for him he's going to be able to find another job as apparently he's pretty good at what he does.

I read in the paper the other day about music artists losing money in the past year and a few had gone from about £10M down to around £6.5M. Apply that to your average £100k a year earner and if he has to go out and get a different job on £60k he's maybe not going to be looking for a GT3 but maybe something a little cheaper.

Everybody is feeling the pain from the downturn, just some more than others.
