Going for a walk.. along a 60 MPH road

Driving around country lanes, you should only ever drive at a speed whereby you can stop in the distance you can see ahead.
The fact that you had to brake sharply means you were driving too fast
Surely these are contradictory statements? On one hand, I can drive at a speed whereby I can stop in the distance I can see ahead, yet on the other the fact I had to brake sharply means I'm driving too fast. You do not stipulate in the first statement that I have to be able to stop without braking sharply, and I'm pretty sure the rules do not have that requirement.

Pedestrians have right of way on any road other than motorways.

Surely not, surely they have the same rights on any road as any other user and do not have privilege ... or at least I cannot see any section of the highway code that states they take priority - in fact even giving them "extra room" is advisory and not the law :D

I go for a casual drive around town, a little jaunt along the A13 dual carriageway, and then a sprint along some back roads. While going along at maybe... 60 mph, there is a whole family, with prams, walking down the lane, side by side, wide enough to block nearly the entire lane. There is a car coming the other way, and I have to brake pretty hard (though not an emergency brake) to be able to nip safely in to the other lane after the oncoming car has passed. As I drive on, I can see most of the rag-tag bunch waving politely at me in the mirror.

Chavs or not, wheres the real issue with this? - You did not have to do an emergency stop and clearly safely nipped past them.

Chavs or not, stupid or not, they have every right to go for a Sunday stroll along a road and you as a driver have to expect the unexpected & act accordingly which imo you did not.

Try a similar encounter with a 44ton truck - albeit @40mph - in the dark (A6006 near melton Mowbray) and you'll feel real annoyance. ;)

You were driving too fast. Again. People like you are why roads are having their speed limits reduced.

Grow up. Slow down.
I was driving within the prescribed limits, and according to road rules.

What's slowing down got to do with growing up? That's called growing old.

Because generally it's the one who slow down who get the chance to grow old. As they say: there are old pilots and there are bold pilots, but there are no old, bold pilots.

NSL roads can be dodgy, I almost went into the a dear the other day at 1am, I imagine my french tin can would've come off pretty badly, expect the unexpected.

Regardless of anything else, walking in the middle of the carriageway is unsafe and if the Police had seen them they would have had words as, if they were where I imagine they were from the OP's description, they were creating a hazard.

I love the way people are moaning about this.

EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU would see this exactly the same way if it'd been you, and ten percent of you would have mown them down and landed upside down in a ditch and died.

In fairness though, that's what you get for living in Tilbury, PMKeates!

 What time of the day was this? I definately saw people walking on the A13 on my way to work in Lakeside

Woo Lakeside staff massive!

Alas, 'tis true. The Tilbury bunch are quite special - the female (I guess it was a female - it had breasts somewhere near the knees, and sounded like a dock worker) looked about 50, but was probably 15.

And I don't live in Tilbury, I live in Chadwell (hence "Tilbury-on-the-hill" :p )

decides to chase after me… when I’m driving a car. I roll along, so slow that the engine is working harder to run the climate control than move the car

:p

Sounds like they need a reality check, very inconsiderate to risk childrens lives.

I'm happy with the later.

If that's a serious statement, you should actually be quite disgusted at yourself...
You may be happy with the latter, but does the person you hit not get a say in the matter?

Am I reading this totally wrong here or is there something missing? This family were, as you say, walking on the correct side of the road (ie. opposing traffic). So for them to be obstructing you, would that not mean you yourself were on the wrong side of the road?

Confusion aside, I understand your point of view. You've obviously come on here to let off the steam that has brewed as a result of this, and you're more than entitled to do so. I too would be pretty disgruntled had a similar thing happened. But if you're looking for some sort of ego inflation with reference to your driving ability, you're not going to get it I'm afraid.

There were two parties involved in the potential incident. Both you and the said family were contributing to the risk. Them through their mindlessness; but equally you because of your speed. Don't get too carried away with the fact that they were 'chavs'. At the end of the day, they were simply an 'obstruction', which could equally have been a large animal or, god-forbid, a tree. Would you be blaming the tree for your written-off beamer? I think not.
