Driving around country lanes, you should only ever drive at a speed whereby you can stop in the distance you can see ahead.
Surely these are contradictory statements? On one hand, I can drive at a speed whereby I can stop in the distance I can see ahead, yet on the other the fact I had to brake sharply means I'm driving too fast. You do not stipulate in the first statement that I have to be able to stop without braking sharply, and I'm pretty sure the rules do not have that requirement.The fact that you had to brake sharply means you were driving too fast
