We have BT Synergy 5500 phone.

I think my dad has rang it this morning off his mobile and when i answered i couldnt hear anything. I hungup the phone then picked it up agian and I can still hear muffled sounds in the background.

I ring his mobile from my mobile and it its engaged. I have tried unplugging the phone from the mains and the phone line but it still has the muffled sounds when i pick it up.

At the moment my dads phone credit it dropping like a stone and we cant call anyone from the house phone, also no one else can ring!

Any ideas

edit - seems my dad dialled home in his pocket from his mobile, he's hungup now. So does this mean with out house phone if someone rings and doesnt hangup then we are stuck on their line until they hangup? Seems a bit stupid

edit 2 - i tried ringing it from my mobile and then hanging up the Synergy. As i thought it doesnt hangup on my mobile. What a crap system

Er.... I'm surprised you didn't know this.

Probably either a knock back from old technology and methods - or a way to maximise profits.

It's hardly a big issue.

I'm sure there used to be a 'hangup' code. Can't find it though.

I've had this happen before. I found that mashing the hangup button usually works. Annoying if it doesn't though, as you can end up with an unusable phone line.

I've not tried it for years but I found that if you pressed the hang-up button down half way a few times you could get another dial tone where you could re-dial out. Anyone you're speaking to gets put on hold. I remember calling a friend and us both putting each other on hold and ringing on the other line which worked great :o.

Anyone know if that's actually meant to be a feature?

My mobile ends the call if the other person hangs up.

So does mine. If the other person hangs up even on a home phone line its fine, the problem is if they dont hangup then you are left with a phone that cannot be hung up. Not so good if you need to ring other people and if you are waiting for business calls

I had this problem and when we contacted BT they said its normal and will auto cut off after 10 minutes as long as our phone wasnt being used.
When i questioned why this was they could offer no explantation as to why its bloody 10 mins.

Yeah watch out for these, when I was on BT my wife rung my mobile from the hub phone had a natter for a few minutes and I hung up. She either forgot to hit the red button or just heard me hang up so assumed the line was dead. Either way when we got the next bill there was a call logged for 3 hours to my mobile and at a cost of £28!! WTF Thing that confused me I had made other calls from my mobile during that time.

It took me about 4 very long calls (totalling about 2 hours) to get them to understand the call was never made intensionally, longest call we ever made was only 20ish minutes. Eventually got a refund...penny grabbing idiots.

Good to hear they have a 10 minute limit now. Years ago there seemed to be no limit.

I was round at a friend's house and her grandma rang her up but never put the receiver down properly. The following day she had still tied up the phone.

She had to ring her parents and get them to go round to hang up the phone.

1. Jiggle the cradle like you're in the 1930's. Barking "Operator, get me West Hampstead six two double-four" is optional.
2. Find and press the 'recall' button which should open another line. Note; this is not the redial button, which is useless to you until you have opened another line.
3. Stoutly reprimand you father for being such a 'noob knowatimsayin'.
