I know a lot of people have a gripe about the use of this word.

Used properly, its describing a process that cleaning simply cant convey, neither can valeting. When polished bliss spend the best part of 140 man hours machine polishing a car alone, aside from all the other cleainig process' etc.. its detailing

but have a read of this

http://www.detailingworld.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=115074

i had to have a laugh at the "performing correcion" on the boot

You mean you gave it a hoover then ?

:D

and since when did it take an hour and half to hoover a boot ? lol Its this type of comments that wind people up when it comes to detailing. And i have to agree, it is seemingly becomming very overused !

I think they need to rename detailingworld.co.uk to ocdworld.co.uk!

I have to admire their work though, sometimes it's jaw-dropping.

In this case, the guy is a plonker!

Paint correction isn't detailing... it's paint correction.

Detailing is cleaning more than the average owner IE: door jambs, engine bay, inner wheels, inside the arches etc.

How ott is that guy with the "horrible condition" comments :/ The car other than that unfortunate scratch on the boot was fine..

detailing to my mind, is being overly obsessive with the cleanliness of your car, like cleaning door jams and under the bonnet and places people dont really see etc..

Equally, so is spending 140 hours polishing your car. As its beyond the realms of what anybody would normally do.

i know its hilarious. But we'll have to let the guy off, he's american :D

The 'detailing' craze is just pathetic, keeping your car in good condition is one thing, but experimenting with all these different products because they are in fashion is hilarious. The most amusing post to me was in that thread, a guy said it was his dream job to clean all these amazing cars. I dunno about you but my dream job would be hooning them around all day instead of cleaning them.

"project car" has to be the newly over used term to replace "detailed"

changing your brake pads turns your car into a project car lol

The engine bay looked pretty clean in the first pic yet its labelled "Dirty, dry and just plain nasty". Little bit of dust in it and thats about it.

The boot apparently has "half of the beaches in the worlds sand in it" Looked more like a few bits of hay that 3 mins with a hoover would have fixed. Mad people.

As I've said previously project car has been stolen by people with crap sheds to hide behind as its easier than admitting they drive a crap shed :p

This.

Oh, I'm going to correct my glove box later as it's quite untidy lol.

That boot was filthy though!

Obviously 1.5hrs hoovering a boot is a bit......well it's not a bit of anything normal but...

I drive a crap shed, and bringing it up to be a decent shed is a bit of a project. This being said mine isn't a project car, unless I was doing something like stripping it and turning it into a track car...but then it'd be a 'Track Project' so still not a project car.
As you say, true project cars are things like the one Housey posted a while ago, and other real cars being fully restored. :)

As for detailing, I don't care for what it is, I clean my car, which involves hoovering, and cleaning in the door shuts etc. That is cleaning as far as I'm concerned...to be honest I don't see what detailing is, as paint correction (swirl marks) is paint correction. :)

That thread is amusing though. :D

No dirtier than my footwells at times (if its wet/muddy etc), which take about 5 minutes to hoover both sides, front and back, remove mats, sponge them down etc

Looks like he spent 2 mins with a vac on it, the carpet is still stained in the after shots.

Engine bay was 'plain nasty'? I wouldn't be able to tell the difference between the before and after tbh.

i use "detailing" my car and other cars a lot, but i use the term very loosely, when people ask me i just said give it a good clean, or put it back to the way you had. Saying detailing to people, unaware look at you sideways. I prefer cleaning anyway, so im a glorified car cleaner :)
