An off-duty regional police chief has opened fire in a supermarket in Moscow, killing at least three people and seriously wounding four others.

Major Denis Yevsyukov, who heads a southern Moscow police department, began shooting on the street before entering the store, say federal investigators.

The policeman had hitched a ride to the store after finishing his late shift.

He shot the driver of the car with an unlicensed gun, according to Russian news agencies.

He then went into the shop where he gunned down the cashier and a customer before shooting at other passers-by.

Interfax news agency said four people, aged between 19 and 23, were hospitalised with head injuries.

Moscow police chief Vladimir Pronin told Russian television Yevsyukov's wife had recently left him.

Yevsyukov was dressed in civilian clothes, with part of his uniform slung around his shoulders, said Mr Pronin.

Supermarket employees were able to activate a silent alarm to alert police, NTV reported.

Yevsyukov shot at but missed an officer who managed to disarm and detain him, NTV said.

"He killed the cashier, we know for sure, and then there were more shots, three shots inside the store," a witness told the TV network.

"Then a shop assistant came running up to us and asked: 'What are you doing here? There is a killer here and you should run away'," she added.

So what a horrible thing for someone in such a position of trust to carry out when he is OFF DUTY
