Many moons ago my dad did teach me, i had to fit one recently so went to the shop trying to remember the rhyme he taught me that was similar to yours. Got there feeling confident i knew what i was doing, picked one up and realized it had a cardboard overlay with a diagram showing exactly how to fit the cables.

I think i could have done it without but tbh it looked like all of the plugs had those diagrams so only a muppet couldn't do it.

Anyone who cannot simply copy the layout of a standard UK plug or pull a diagram off of google and do it has to be physically retarded. Same goes for any domestic electrical install really.

I can.
Turn it on its side and think of a cross-section of the earth.
blue (sky) is at the top
green (grass) at ground level
brown (mud) underground

Had to do this recently, wanted to swap the standard plugs on a couple of lamps for some round pin plugs so they could be plugged in to the 5A lighting circuit instead.

most people just dont want to. Because as we all know, opening a plug = instant painful death

I can't remember how I learn't it now - but I've been doing for so long that it's second nature now. I also need to know the older colours in case I work in older buildings :p

Do they not teach it in schools anymore?! :( Ah I remember those days in the science lab, playing with wires and electricity...:D

In answer to the question: When I was 12, yes. Now? Well it's been 11 years, but I'm sure I'd figure it out!

When I was at school in 6th form me and my mate did all the sound and lights for the stage shows, we rewired so many plugs and sockets, looking back it was probably quite agains health and safety but its a good job we did because the elderly care taker had made loads of extension leads and had wired the sockets the wrong way round like you would if you were wiring a plug.

That was a boring day redoing all of those.

yeah but school and a proffesional business that could get sued and what not is (for me) a different league.

well its pretty much compulsory for all plugs to be moulded these days, hence the near 0 need to know how to wire a standard plug, i was taught in school, no idea if people still are though

I was never taught it in school, but I've done loads in my time, so yes. My Dad's always done all of the DIY in our house and I've always watched / helped.

When i was doing my apprenticeship one of the tests we had was to wire a 3 pin plug in under 90 seconds, i passed but believe me when i say the majority of people failed and some idiots were taking over 10 minutes to complete.

Never needed to so don't have a clue. Can't imagine it's hard though and if I ever needed to I would just google it. Not exactly one of lifes important lessons if you ask me.

Yes although I haven't done one since being taught it in school :p We had some test on it (to do with the cables and other related stuff) and got 100% correct (only one :D).
