Anyone got the new Golf (Mk VI) yet?

Build quality and reliability are two different things. Mercedes are one example :p

Exactly. A car can have really crappy build quality but be effortlessly reliable and never, ever go wrong - basically a 90's Jap car. Built like a pile of rubbish with horrible cheap crap plastic everywhere but it'll never let you down. Or a car can feel like its hewn from granite and be completely solid yet break all the time. Hello Mercedes :p

Personally I'd prefer a well built yet less reliable car. You can pay to fix broken things, but you cant pay to get a crap interior redesigned.

Meh the Mk6 GTI does look nice imo. The other Golfs look dull, but then the market segment it shares with the Astra and Focus is pretty dull, so it is what it is.

The headlight dial is cheap and positively vulgar to touch and the door card mounted arm rests are completely nasty and the satin finish on them looks disgusting too.

Personally, I'd rather have than the glovebox lid fall off that the car breaking down in the middle of nowhere...

The Golf 5 doesn't have a crap interior.

Blimey, lots of conflicting reports in here.
My friend has a Mk4 which feels pretty flimsy and crappy inside and to be honest my sisters Mk3 feels better, but my gf has an '06 2.0GT Mk5 which feels miles better inside than the mk4 - there's absolutely no contest.

I can give these comparisons because I spend a fair amount of time in both - can everyone who's saying the mk4 is better say this?

You need to compare with similar trim levels. My Mk4 GTI had a great interior. I really loved it and thought it felt very up market. My Leon however.... (the plastic on the door panels is nasty.)

Don't bother with the iPod connector, it's pants. You only get 5 playlist support and it doesn't even charge the latest 4G Nano, Touch or iPhone. Go for the Aux in if you want mp3 player support and get a cheapo lighter charger for the thing.

ooo didnt know that, ZING to you VW!

The Mk5 Golf has one of the worst interiors I've seen in a newist car for years. Dull, grey, scratchy plastics.

I'm sorry, the Bravo must rate worse, but i suppose some could confuse OMG curves for greatness.

The main part of the golfs dash is all soft touch plastics, with the centre console being hard plastic, but lets face it most cars are like this anyways.

I'm not defending the car too much since it should be better for the price but its far from as you say.

What are people comparing the interior to? An XJ6? Bentley? Top of the range Audi?

Look at how nasty the Focus interior is:

and correct me if I'm wrong but most of this looks like its made of....hard, grey, plastic.

And the Astra interior is diabolical, cheap, and with nasty 1970s monochrome display

Civic? Err.....

Nothing wrong with this

or this (though the alu trim does admittedly look a bit tacky)

I would not say the MK6 is a vast improvement on the mk5 I think they have changed very little mostly the lights and wings.

Look at the mk5 and mk6 interior.....as above...v v v simlar

How can you tell without actually touching the materials? The MK1 Focus is a 12 year old design so it's unfair to compare it to the rest is it now?

As expected some interesting and diverse opinions!

Forgive me for the excessive quoting but there's loads I want to address.

1.4 and near enough to 150ish BHP? That's quite nice for a small engine. Since it's a new mark, why not buy the previous one at a rock bottom price? I'm sure a lot of dealers would want to get rid of their mk5's by now.

Because I disliked the interior quality enough that the only one I'd consider would be GTi, ED30, and R32. R32 is a no-no cause of chavvy appearance and large road tax, getting larger. The other two are no-nos cause good ones are still going for £15k, which is ridiculous, as I can get the car I mention in my first post for £3k more than that and its 0-60, whilst not everything by any means, is only a second lower than a GTi. Finally, whilst it feels fairly solid, the Mk5 interior quality is nasty; hard and cheap plastics.

Saw one on the road the other day, they do actually look great, think it was in GT Sport trim.

As for options? Depends on how much you will spend. I would choose the Dynaudio Pack with iPod function, full Leather, and Sat Nav is pretty damn pricy so would give that a miss.

Are they still charging for armrests?

Lol they're certainly not for the MkVI GT. I almost died laughing when I heard that VW charged extra for an armrest on certain models. Regarding SatNav, I do want the factory option, but it's outrageously expensive as you say so I'm skipping that one. The other tips are good, thanks.

it's turbo charged and supercharged

That's correct, the 1.4 TSi has a supercharger and a turbocharger, which takes over at higher speeds.

The new one is ugly as sin. What a totally average eurobox. The Golf used to be the trend setter aswell :(

I don't think it's ugly personally, however I agree that it's a 'totally average eurobox'; just what I need.

I looked at pricing a mk6 GTI equivalent to my mk5 Ed30 and it was an extra 12-14k on top.... errr no!

ED30 is a great car and you're right, it's just not worth it.

Get a scirocco instead! Much better and very sexy.

Can't, they only come in 3 doors. We need five since we've decided to unleash young Robbie Gs on the world.

What's your definition of massively exciting? Audi R8? Caterham? This is the mid range hatchback market we're talking about. No mid range hatchback is going to be "massively exciting" - its just got to be good within its class of Astra SXis and Focus 1.6s.

Exactly true.

The headlight dial is cheap and positively vulgar to touch and the door card mounted arm rests are completely nasty and the satin finish on them looks disgusting too.

Which car are you referring to?

Don't bother with the iPod connector, it's pants. You only get 5 playlist support and it doesn't even charge the latest 4G Nano, Touch or iPhone. Go for the Aux in if you want mp3 player support and get a cheapo lighter charger for the thing.

Noted, useful information.

They look reasonably similar, but if you sit in one and feel around, it's certainly sufficiently better in the MkVI.
