i do most of my electrical work at home, changing light sockets / light fittings, wired my oven in with a new 10mm twin and earth cable to the fuse box. Wired new sockets in etc, i'm quite knowleged :)

Im sure I could manage to do it by reading 1 webpage but ive never been specifically taught so I answered no.

Im 21 and did physics up til gcse but no further. Its just something ive never had to learn or use though if the need ever arose I wouldnt call an electrician or anything wimpy like that :p

That just reminds me of a time when a friend of a friend suggested I call the AA to change a flat tyre. Suffice to say I didn't waste my time on a phone call ;)

No modern appliances have red wires, wall outlets will have a black and red though so be careful how you wire them up as some outlet casings are not labelled but perhaps you should not be wiring them up if you are not sure :p

Plugs...
Blue Left
Brown Right
Yellow&Green in the middle.

That's how I mesmorised it :p

New outlets should also use the blue/brown/green colour coding too, as should all new rewires.

Ah yes, not actually needed to fix a plug outlet for a family/friend in a new house yet :p

OK, I answered yes, but having read some people's answers, I haven't "memorised" how to do it. I would have to look online to remind myself which wire went where. I "can do it" in the sense that I've done it several times and wouldn't be particularly concerned about it. In these days of the internet I don't really equate "being able to do" something with having exactly memorised it.

It used to be taught in school - I remember the science lesson where we were shown how to fit them and then everyone had a go but that's just not done any more. My kids don't know and that's something I shall teach them.
I was taught it in science last year?

bit of trivia here, did you know you should wire the plug so the earth has enough slack so it would be last to pull out. if you don't know why then you shouldn't be wiring one ;)

We were taught in standard grade physics as part of an electronics module, although I already knew by then because my dad was an electrician. I'm sure I could rewire a plug if I had to, but I'd check how to do it first. I generally get my dad to do stuff like that though because it's quicker and safer.

i've done this a few times, changing the odd lamp or other device from uk to continental and vice versa..

the fact everything is moulded these days is a bit of a pain if you don't have an adapter handy
