Launch day 60gb PS3 borked

So the cause of this is basicly the same as the RROD on the 360?

Kinda of but not really, the PS3 heat problems are down to to much dust inside the machine, this blocks airflow leading to eventual possible chip failure. If you keep your PS3 clean and dust free it will decrease this possible problem exponetially.

My PS3 suddenly stopped recognizing any and all discs last week. Blu ray, DVD you name it. The drive icon would flash in the top right corner but nothing was detected in the drive. It was a 60Gb model bought in October 2007.Needless to say I wasn't best pleased at a 430 quid machine packing up so soon.

Phoned Sony and the kind lady said it was out of warranty but "as a gesture of goodwill, we will repair it free of charge". Courier picked it upthe very next day and waiting for its return any day now.
Needless to say I'm very, very grateful to Sony customer services !!! It's coming back with a 3 month warranty, but after that think I'll take out continuous play to be on the safe side.
Cheers

sean1984 I would tell sony to stick the repair charge up their hole, not only is the repair expensive (imo) but other people have got it repaired for free.

Strange that they charge sean1984 145quid and repaired imran his PS3 free of charge

Maybe it just depends on who you get on the phone, maybe try calling a few times until you get someone that says it will be repaired for free?

With it being a launch console i assume you payed full wack for it, there for if sony argues with you i would tell them i expect a 400 pound peace of electronics to last longer than 2 years.

£425 even. I would be mighty annoyed if that happened to me.

I dont see what the price has got to do with it, the machine clearly had a 1 year warranty when you purchased it and nothing is guaranteed to function without fault inside or outside of the warranty - no matter what the product is.

Those of you who have been treated very well by Sony whilst being out of warranty - well done - this is impressive service but this should not be taken for granted imho.

Guarantee isn't a right it is a limitation.

Sony can say it's one year but it should last a 'normal' time and one year is too short for a console, arguably you can say it should last the lifetime of a console.

Obviously this isn't a black and white situation and is very open to discussion, but you should never accept the repair cost straight away and it is worth pushing for a free repair.

Exactly the WRONG way to go about it.

When you argue with someone their to help you wont get them on your side by having an attitude.
Pay the £145 or try to negotiate a bit less, do however explain you know of others that havnt had to pay first.
Even if that fails this is STILL cheaper than buying a new one isnt it.

Its unfornatute but these things happen.

Price has everything to do with it. You do not buy a £425 product only for it to last a year. Simple as. These machines are intended to last at the very least a decade in Sony's own words. People have owned PS1s and PS2s for years and years, we do not want to have to replace our PS3s every year and a half or so. Come on now then.

If Microsoft can and will do the decent thing about it, then Sony should too, to be honest.

I too had to replace my launch day model as the optical sound didn't work (for all I know it never worked)

Shame as the chrome silver on the original is much nicer that the mat on the latest releases :(

Price is NOTHING to do with it or as a consumer are your rights any greater with a higher priced product.
Be lucky it was 2 years as some electronics (Panasonic Projectors for example in the Euro/UK regions have upto 3YR warranty but in USA sometimes only 1YR warranty)
The warranty/guarntee is sometimes decded by region laws and not manufacturer or so i thought.

Things fail also, particulary high tech electronics.
Legally is Sony in a position to refund or replace outside of the GNT period or is it known that because of a design flaw their is a high defect rate?
MS case and situation is indeed perhaps different.

Like all companies yes they work outside of the GNT period but sometimes the decision is dealt with on an individual basis hence why as an individual case how you go about it helps your chances.

Only reason MS did it is they had multiple incoming law suits which would have cost them more money than the 3yr warranty has. If your 360 is out of the 3 year warranty now you still have to pay MS to fix it, standard practice in the world of C.E. if in doubt buy an extended warranty or purchase from a place that gives it for free if you want peice of mind.

There is next to no reason to pay for a PS3 repair.

Continuous Play has NOTHING in it's terms and conditions to stop you setting up a policy, knowing your console is already broken.

I have successfully signed up this month for a fiver after my PS3 started playing up, called them yesterday and explained what it's doing, and they're coming tomorrow with a refurbed 60GB. When it arrives, I will cancel and if needed, can sign up again if they don't change their T&Cs.

Sorted.

Courier dropped of my PS3 today, brand new cover aswell. They didn't send me out a refurb, just repaired my one which I'm grateful for as my PS3 was very little used anyway. Think I will write a letter to Sony today to say how grateful I am with their cutomer service. I remember a Sony monitor we had 10 years ago. Packed up 14 months after purchase ie 4 mths out of warranty and they replaced that for a brand new one without any questions. My hats off to them!

Cheers

Imran

Id consider that myself for £5 PM, do you have to give the PS3 serial number?
Curious for owners of more than one PS3...

Although taking out the policy to get a replacement and applying for that just after you have registered is a bit suspect.

Yep, you need to enter the serial number on the site.

The insurance itself is provided by Domestic and General.
